Goaltending conundrum v3.0-Reimer or Bernier?

After reading Carlyle's comments before last nights game that Scrivens is the best of the two goalies right now, one has to wonder if we have another goaltending controversy heating up again.

Personally, I think Reimer is the only true number one the Leafs have, and if he starts to falter the team is in big trouble again. My guess is they bring in a veteran ASAP. Perhaps at the deadline?

A puzzler:

Reimer: 902 min, 2.66 GAA, .918 sv%
Scrivens: 888 min, 2.63 GAA, .915 sv%

Yet Reimer is 10-4-2 while Scrivens is 6-8-0.

:o :o :o

That says one thing to me.  Reimer stops the Key shots more, and in turn the wins come his way. If your team is up by a goal you need to hold the net.

Scrivens has lost many 4-2, 3-1 type games where his stats would be good but the team didn't score enough.  Reimer's won a couple 5-4 games where he didn't play particularly well but the team scored enough.

Now, is that an account of the team feeling more comfortable with Reimer in net, therefore, they score more where in the case of Scrivens, they play a tighter, less open game because they feel they have to protect him?

I'm not saying that is the case, but a lot of the time it is.

Scrivens was really good when Reimer went down including the back to back shutouts where he stopped 71 shots in the process.  I think we need to give him a few games in a row now.

mirtle: Scrivens looks hurt here in practice. Trainer talking to him.

mirtle: Scrivens let out a few yelps there on the ice but he's back up and playing again. Something bothering him though.

There comes a time where repeating that he had back-to-back shutouts a little while back loses its luster.

Especially when looked at in contrast with his more recent performances.

That certainly would be the case if somebody has a certain amount of doubt as to Scriven's abilities which is the general consensus on here.  I am very happy with Scrivens as a back up on this team and that is all he is, the 1A 1B thing is a crock.  Reimer has started 16 of 24 games when he has been healthy so forgive me if I am just a little bit frustrated that he hasn't been given more of a chance.  When your starter hasn't performed, I look to my back up that has played very well in that role for a possible answer and not just for one game, give him a few.

Your so called starter not performing has a better SV% and has points in 13 of 16 starts.  Scrivens has points in 6 of 15 starts.  No exactly sure where your argument stands here.  Reimer is producing, Scriven's is not.

Scrivens definitely hurt, just slammed his stick in disgust while working out the kinks,

Queue the goalie trade rumours!

It's not as cut and dried as that, LK. Both goalies have had good and bad games. Management believes that Reimer is their number 1 guy. Neither guy has shown he is a true number 1 or a bust.

Don't even go there, hard to get on any kind of a role when your spot starting for all but 24 games of the season.  Scrivens aside from when he was forced into the starting role is either coming in after Reimer has a poor game and the team isnt playing well or the second game of a back to back which is never an easy task either.  I wasn't going to bring up the stats because frankly they are very similar but if you must bring it up I take Scrivens 10 points better GAA and extra shutout to dwarf your .001 difference in save % and 4 extra wins any day of the week when taking into account how Scrivens has been used. Yes Scrivens is the back up whenever Reimer is healthy.  Scrivens is used to a big workload with the Marlies and I zero in on the games when he was given the ball to run with to start the season and then more importantly when Reimer was hurt as more of a reflection on his play.  All I am asking for is a few games here, wow it is just crazy how you people and this city will defend Reimer to no end.

Scrivens says he just took some shots in some unprotected areas but he is fine..

Fine sure but this will make RC's decision even easier for Saturday night, no doubt in my mind Reimer gets the start

Arguing over whether Reimer or Scrivens has been better ignores the fact that neither has shown he's the long-term answer to our goalie problems.
