Second period shot attempts and scoring chances were even at 5 on 5. So some of their shots got blocked or missed. Don't just go by the shot clock because you'll twist yourself into a conniption for no reason.
Vegas was better in the beginning of the second and the Leafs weathered the storm.
Good grief. If the team fails to get a shot on goal, they won't score. If they don't score, they don't win. That fact trumps (eesh) every other statistic, advanced or not.
And you don't get shots on goal if you don't make shot attempts. I think we're on the same page, but you're a bit more focused on the specific outcome of shots on goal than I would be given that we're zooming in on half a period of play. If a couple of those attempts didn't get blocked, or didn't miss the net (for whatever reason), this isn't a conversation.
I distinctly remember Roman Polak scoring a goal that was about 5 feet wide, but it went in off a defender's skate and does not technically qualify as a shot on goal.
Edit: haha, it was more like 12 feet
