Idiocracy

The FBI is asking for help identifying the insurrectionists.  If only they had some way of apprehending these people while they were confined in an area.
I think I now understand.  Police are colourblind to white.

I actually felt bad for a good number of the police officers that were first on the scene. Grabbing and arresting IMO would have led to even more issues.
The biggest question I have is why weren't they more prepared?

Based on what I've read, the theories range from not wanting to enflame Trump's anger even more and lead to him doing anything unhinged, a complete lack of communication and organization between the various law enforcement/security agencies, or a portion of the leadership supporting (or, at least, not objecting to) the attempted coup.

I tend to believe in a combination of the first two more than the third option - though, I'm sure there were some members of the various forces who were on the side of the insurgents. The signs were clear, so this isn't a case of not recognizing the potential for things to go sideways. There was a level of intentionality and irresponsibility.

Sure.  It's the contrast between how they treat black lives matter protestors (unmarked, unnamed officers throwing peaceful protestors walking down the street into unmarked vans; law enforcement actively attacking peaceful protestors with tear gas as part of a photo-op for the president; .... the list is unending) with these folks (literally opening the gates and letting them in to interrupt the democratic transfer of power process).

Systemic racism is a difficult concept to define in its entirety, but this is a pretty effective example to illustrate some of the consequences.

So that's a no on impeachment then eh?

Given how long it took to organize the first impeachment, even though McConnell did not allow any evidence to be presented, it would seem impossible to make impeachment happen.  Even if it were possible, McConnell would stall things --- moving forward with impeachment would place his fellow Republicans in electoral jeopardy as Trump's supporters would attack them.  Everything McConnell does, including speeches in the last day, is to further long-term Republican power.  Don't delude yourself into thinking he suddenly had an epiphany that Trump is a bad guy and feels like now is the time to "stand up for what's right."  It's just calculated political posturing because he sees how the winds have shifted.

I mean the Senate set the precedent that we don't need evidence to go to trial.  Seven senators and 138 congressmen kind of did that again when they opposed the election results over no actual evidence.

I don't want to give FB too much credit here, since they're one of the largest (if not the largest) source of how all this bullshit conspiracy/qanon stuff spreads, but this is a pretty bold thing to do.

I wasn't expecting any real traction to impeachment less than 2 weeks before his term officially ends, but this is still disappointing. At the very least, he should have been censured - something that likely would have had a fair degree of bipartisan support. Not that it would have done much in a practical sense, but it would have at least shown that these elected officials are at least willing to put it on official record that they feel what happened yesterday and Trump's role in it are to be condemned. A number have already put that in the public record, but having an official record would at least be a symbolic step.

Facebook is about to face real regulation in the next month, so might as well get a head start.

Whoever is in charge of Capital security, should be drawn and quartered for allowing a hoard of Ya hoo's to storm the heart of American democracy.  I would have had the army surrounding the building from the start. At the least a lot more National Guard.  This was not necessary even with lunatic Donald calling for a march.

Reports out there that Trump resisted calling in the National Guard

Whatever they do, impeachment or the 25th amendment or throwing him in prison, they have to make sure he can't run again in 2024.
