Kyle Dubas is new Leafs GM

That article was getting trashed pretty much everywhere I looked yesterday. Don't even give them the clicks that's all it wants.

He's a Sabre's writer. Bitter much? lol

The Leafs will have a Salary Cap puzzle to figure out over the next couple years, but it's not nearly as bad as people, who happen to cheer for other teams, proclaim across the Internet.

Seriously though, arguments about signing Tavares aside:

Tavares, while great, is not what the Leafs needed. All the money spent on him will not stop the team?s goals-against average.

and

The high-octane Leafs that were headed toward a championship took the wrong fork in the tracks.

This is embarrassingly bad writing.

Don't forget all those times he struggled with basic math trying to figure out next years cap situation. $10.3mil divided by 9 players is $1.14mil, not $895k.

This Bruce Arthur piece is a nice palate cleanser:
https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/opinion/2018/10/02/leafs-gm-kyle-dubas-turns-the-page-on-old-school-hockey-traditions.html

Rielly, again, comes through with actually thoughtful responses
Dubas is different, the way Shanahan was. As TSN?s Ray Ferraro said of Dubas, ?He?s very rare ? I think his biggest asset is he?s curious, is open to new ideas.? One thing that separates Dubas is, he shares his ideas with his players and staff the way a 32-year-old would. He texts them links ? podcasts, articles, tweets, maybe a picture of a page from a book, maybe underlined.

?Yeah, I always just think that if it?s something that might be helpful,? says Dubas. ?Sometimes it?s a player that struggles, or (has) been struggling, and it?s experiences of something that I read of someone else who has gone through a similar situation where they?ve struggled. I don?t know, I just think that everyone here, I know you?re here because you?re a player, or you work for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but they all have their individual lives.

?And my thought has always been that if I have an interest in helping every single person who works here ? whether they?re a player or a staff member, whomever ? the onus is on me to ultimately help them reach their potential, whatever that may be.?

[...]

Morgan Rielly talked with Dubas on a summer day about, as he put it, ?the longevity of our opportunity,? and a week later got a link to a tweet with a video about another NHL team?s challenges dealing with the salary cap.

?There was no context given,? said Rielly. ?I watched it and I texted him back and all I said was thanks, got it. At the time I texted him back I didn?t know what the context was. And then I went, oh, I talked to him about this.

[...]

?We?re not getting carried away with it: it?s mostly about our team and the sport,? says Rielly. ?But it?s goal-based, most of it?s process based ? It?s refreshing because in sports, especially in this game, you can kind of beat a dead horse a little bit, where you come in and just talk about all the clich?s. You know, the way you?re supposed to play and get pucks deep and all that. It?s good to get a little bit of fresh air.

?There?s much more to what he?s doing than just group-texting people, you know, but he?s really taking steps to assert himself. He?s got a unique perspective on everything. For a guy like myself who has been around a mix of personalities ? old school and new school, guys who love hockey more than anything ? to speak with him about the process and creating a culture, non-clich? type conversations, is pretty cool. I think he has a great idea of what he wants to do and a unique way of getting there.?

Oh man. You read a thing like that and you can't wait to start being impressed by the decisions he makes as a hockey executive.

And here's Friedman's Big Read on how the Tavares signing all went down:

Some interesting tidbits there, like how the Leafs put up a Tavares banner in the ACC/SBA rafters for the recruitment video they shot.

Great read! Friedge with the fascinating behind-the-scenes nuggets. We are incredibly fortunate to have this guy. And thanks Hobbes for the DGB post.

A very different GM:  Kyle Dubas' approach sits very well for all of the Maple Leaf players, both in his day-to-day dealings as well as in his non-traditional way of keeping the lines of communication open...

We've talked about this before but a reminder:

1.  If the content you wish to share is behind a paywall/pay website, none of it should be copied word-for-word. It's okay to paraphrase a short recap of an idea, but must not be plagarized in any way.  And the link, as always, must be posted so that credit goes back to the source/author.

2.  If it's not behind a paywall, nothing more than a very short paragraph or concept should be copied (again paraphrasing is better), and the link always needs to be exposed.  The source/author again must always be provided to point the reader back to the original content.

Copying and pasting text is also a violation of The Athletic's terms of service.

I liked how he said the Leafs goals against is not championship quality, you mean like the eventual champions Washington who allowed more regular season goals than the Leafs? [emoji848]

Mark Hunter is saying stuff today. I'm posting it here because he doesn't have his own thread.
