Leafs 2017 Entry Draft

I wonder if Toews mentions how they got swept in the 1st round.

"10 years ago the Blackhawks took me at #3 which, coincidentally, is the same number of goals we scored in the playoffs this year."

Manny‏ @MannyElk

The Hawks' first round selection has more vowels in his last name than goals they scored all playoffs this year.

Coincidentally it involves another 3 since then as well.

This is a first round where I expect pretty much every team is happy with what it got, there was such a lack of consensus on who's best.

Amazing! If this kid doesn't get mono, he's likely a top 5 pick. Thrilled about this pick.
He was listed at 2 right behind Patrick Just after Matthews was drafted. The mono hold him up. This is a Steal at 17th

It wouldn't just be the mono. Other teams understand what that is.

What I've seen to explain his drop on most folks' lists is creeping doubts about his decision-making and play without the puck. No one seems to doubt his skating or puck handling.

I wonder where he ranked among the defensemen on the Leafs' list who went a bit earlier (higher/lower than Foote? Brannstrom? Valimaki?).

I like the Leafs going for a D-man with a lot of upside as it's the main area of need for this team. Top pairing blueliners aren't easy to acquire and cost a bundle to trade for, so if the Leafs can develop one through the draft I'm all for it.

Here's a really good rundown of Liljegren's player profile.

He dropped because of a) mono; b) question marks about defensive development; c) awkward interviews.

The defensive issues and risk taking are symptomatic of a really good player trying to do too much, and being bounced around multiple teams.

I'm of the mind that defensive instincts can be honed more easily with consistent structure and partners, whereas offensive creativity is much more difficult to teach and develop. He's got all the tools to succeed in the modern game, and further experience against higher competition will only help.
