Leafs 2017 Entry Draft

He dropped because of a) mono; b) question marks about defensive development; c) awkward interviews.

I don't really buy A or C there. Liljegren didn't do interviews with TSN or Sportsnet and both of them had him dropping all year regardless and while it's a fine line between "having mono" and "what mono did to his game" let's be real and say that if an elite player had mono, was out with it and came back and played gangbusters it wouldn't affect his draft status much. We've seen that with guys suffering serious injuries in their draft years(Patrick, for instance) so to just say "he had mono" seems like a misrepresentation of what went on.

Probably a fairer list would be A) He didn't have a good year(with Mono being a factor) B) Questions emerged about his defensive game and C) Other players surpassed him. If Liljegren was seen as an elite offensive prospect with some questions about his defensive game, he'd have gone higher because that more or less sums up someone like Makar.

I'm sure it makes sense but it seems pretty dime store for Sportsnet to be airing the second day of the draft but not have their own broadcast.

I've always said the draft is a crap shoot even these guys going in the first and second some of them may never play. saying that if I were the Leafs I would be trading up and already done so. Timmins and Hague could have been good additions. Could have nabbed 2 d men ranked in the top 25 or so with Liljegren and maybe Hague. I understand these kids may be a couple years away and personally I think Lou and company are going to pick up a D in a trade but I would sacrifice a couple later picks to have picked up Hague.

You're assuming a move like that wasn't mulled over, which I would find shocking.

Maybe its 2 4th rounders and we don't have a 3rd correct?

Right and it cost Philadelphia a 3rd and a 4th to move up 9 spots from 45 to 35. So the Leafs likely didn't have the assets to trade up for Hague or Timmons.

I thought we had 2 second rounders ours and the Sens.

I believe we had 3 at one point (SJ's maybe?), but traded 2 away.

They had 3. One from San Jose for the Polak deal and Ottawa's for Phaneuf. They traded San Jose's to Anaheim as part of the Andersen deal and Ottawa's to Tampa for Boyle.

Just looking at our picks and looks like we traded our pick to TB and we have the Sens thus picking 59th.

Eemeli Rasanen is the pick. Who'da thunk it?

Looking at options for the 2nd round pick in the kind of interesting department: Eemeli Rasanen is big(6'7 200lbs), a right handed shot and doesn't appear to just be a lump(39 points).

Reports out of Sportsnet NY is that the Leafs and Isles will be making a trade should JVR waive his NTC and agree to an extension.

Can't officially sign until July 1st either way.

Good call and I like the pick.

FriedgeHNIC: Sounds like CAL/NYI closing in on a Hamonic deal

I wouldn't blame JVR if he refused.

I think people have really underestimated the way that being within spitting distance of free agency is going to affect the Leafs' ability to get a solid return for JVR.
