Leafs @ Flyers - Jan. 18th, 8:00pm - SNO, TSN 1050

Marner with a stupid play in his own zone. turned the whole game.
Short handed goal against. FFS
PHI goalie stood on his head. FFS

Nylander and Gardiner both take the same guy. How difficult is it to defend 3 on 3. Gardiner had the guy with the puck and Nylander heads that way as well. Defense at its finest.

Another OT goal against where Nylander doesn't pick up the right guy. On a back check. Thought maybe Gardiner should have gone to the other guy but he had to take the puck carrier.

Nylander has a bad tendency to puck watch 3-on-3. He's too talented not to have him out there, but, someone's gotta sit him down and learn him how to read those plays better.

Yeah, that was awful by Nylander.

I have faith that the coaching staff will get it done. They seem to be pushing all the right buttons.

At this rate the smart money is to be a seller at the deadline, we have some great trade chips and I?d rather see rookies in the team learning than a bunch of vets that the coach is in love with that can apparently do no wrong.

That, and with the way they're going IF they can hold onto their playoff spot (something that seemed pretty much locked up not that long ago, but, with the way they're playing, I'm not comfortable assuming as much now), they're not making out of the division. This team cannot beat Tampa or a team capable of beating Tampa.

3rd period ice-time for the D:

Gardiner 09:53
Hainsey 08:46
Polak 07:42
Rielly 05:25
Carrick 04:10
Dermott 02:06

Gardiner played 25:28 total, almost 4 more minutes than Hainsey who was second with 21:43.

That?s a lot of minutes being devoted to chipper outers. When Zaitsev?s back, it?ll be more of the same too.

We have to play Polak to protect the leads.  Pay attention.

Zach Hyman (17:16) led all forwards in 5-on-5 ice time, about 2 full minutes more than Matthews (15:22) who came second.

At least it wasn't Komarov?

Even Mirtle's putting the blame on Gardiner here. I don't get it. Nylander and Coots are literally side by side at one point and Nylander abandons him.

Even when Nylander starts to slide over it's clear Gardiner can't just move over to Couturier because Nylander isn't catching up to Konecny, he would have just given him a free lane to the net.

I think ultimately the bulk of the blame is on Nylander, he decided early he was going after the puck carrier when he should have stayed with the other guy. But maybe Gardiner could have adjusted and shaded over to the middle a bit to compensate.

Overall, just another example of poor coverage in OT.

Nylander saw Gardiner starting to shade the pass, so Nylander went for the carrier, and then Gardiner also went for the carrier.
