They seem to be angry because apparently Wilson told them on Saturday that he had made the decision to start Reimer "three days ago."

Honestly wouldn't be surprised (nor would I care) if he said that just to make them angry.

He was a little exasperated with them asking about the goalies during that exchange. "I'm not talking about that (the starter decision) anymore .. I mean this is ad nauseum after a while"

Roughly, "three days ago" is when Reimer was cleared to play. Did Wilson take the question of 'when did Wilson make the decision?' as when did he make the decision Reimer would start one of the two games ? In the context of the discussion, it's possible that's what Wilson thought he was responding to because he was also talking about them considering Reimer for the Ranger game in that discussion.

Further, just a day before, Wilson declared "more than likely" and he wasn't "being definitive" about Gustavsson starting. And Reimer did not know he was starting when he spoke with the media that day.

So for me, the "three days" doesn't hold water. In part because Burke and possibly Reimer would also have to be lying.

The love/hate relationship between Leafs and media in this city seems way over the top.  Is it like this anywhere else?  I guess in NY they eat alive people in certain sports, just look at the Yankees and Billy Martin/Steinbrenner thing.  Fascinating to watch, like schoolyard stuff.

Leafs don?t want to rush Reimer?s return

These quotes from the linked article above are from Wilson's media scrum on Friday where some in the media claim he lied.
?Sometimes what you want with goalies ? and I just read that Ryan Miller?s dressing tonight but he?s not playing ? is you want the goalie to get into kind of the game-day routine,? said head coach Ron Wilson. ?And backing up is not a bad idea.?
....
?We?re convinced that he?s got a bright future as a goaltender,? Wilson said of Scrivens, who went 2-4-1 with a .904 save percentage. ?We knew that after training camp. I think that?s why you?ve seen us not make any moves in the meantime. I think we?ve got incredible depth.?

But somehow, Traikos was able to conclude this from that media scrum:
That likely means that Reimer will backup Jonas Gustavsson, who has started the last four games, against the Boston Bruins on Saturday

Again, another member of the media who heard the same scrum, like Siegel, concluded it was "likely" Gustavsson was starting but not definite.

I just don't get why Cox and the rest of the media feel this sense of entitlement that they should be in the know about everything.

That's the thing that bothers me. I suppose it's perpetuated by the public's thirst to know everything immediately.

Maybe it's just my personality, but when Wilson says Gustavsson is most likely starting and then Reimer starts, my reaction towards Wilson is a great big "meh." It's a non issue that gets dissected to death for what? lack of something else to talk/write about?

I get the feeling that Cox and Wilson have personal issues, in that Cox feels Wilson doesn't respect him or some crap like that.  So anything that Wilson does where Cox thinks he's being slighted he makes a huge issue out of.  So childish.

You may think Wilson & Burke are being childish as well, but how often can you take reporters constantly bashing you, calling for your head, ripping you in the media?

But BB & RW have forgotten the cardinal rule: the media needs them more than they need the media.  All they have to do is ignore the Coxes of the world and it will drive them certifiably crazy.  Going down in the tweetpits with them is a losing proposition every time.

If someone accuses another of lying and there's no response from the accused, that can lead to people believing the accusation and the issue festering.

On that basis, I think a response was warranted.

To me, this type of response is fair and appropriate:
LeafsBB20Brian Burke
Our Coach told the media the starter. He told me as well. James says he feels good and our Coach makes the switch...

LeafsBB20Brian Burke
...Making a goalie switch is not just our Coach's prerogative, it is his duty.

It could have ended right there.

These type of responses are getting down in the mud with the clowns:
coachrw63Ron Wilson
Favorite movies: Liar,Liar; The Invention of Lying; Big Fat Liar. HaHa!

I love the quote about the liars in sports. Many gainfully employed in the media.

Some may find them entertaining. Some may find them lacking class and/or "Going down in the tweetpits with them".

TSN is running a story on it calling it a "lying scandal".  Seriously?!  Who cares if Wilson lied/deceived/was vague/whatever?!  This whole issue is absolutely stupid.

From TSN

TORONTO -- Tensions are on the rise between the Toronto Maple Leafs and reporters who cover the team.

Brian Burke came out in defence of coach Ron Wilson on his Twitter account late Sunday night after Wilson endured criticism for starting James Reimer for Saturday's 4-1 loss in Boston.

"I love the quote about the liars in sports," wrote Burke. "Many gainfully employed in the media."

Wilson was accused of lying after indicating that Jonas Gustavsson would start against the Bruins following Friday's practice. Instead, he chose to give Reimer his first action since the goaltender suffered concussion-like symptoms after a collision with Habs captain Brian Gionta on Oct. 22.

The general manager indicated Wilson simply had a change of heart.

"Our coach told the media the starter," Burke wrote in a separate tweet. "He told me as well. James says he feels good and our coach makes the switch. Making a goalie switch is not just our coach's prerogative, it is his duty. And of course, the media grand jury weighs in."

It's the latest sign of tension between the team and reporters. Earlier this season, the Leafs were furious after the Toronto Star contacted Reimer's mother for a story about his health.

Wilson clearly saw some humour in the latest mini-controversy. After Sunday's practice in New York City, he posted a message to his own Twitter account.

"Favorite movies: Liar,Liar; The Invention of Lying; Big Fat Liar. HaHa!"

For me it comes down to this... as a GM and coach of in a huge hockey market like Toronto is a good relationship with the media important to you or not? That question must be answered by BB and RW.

If the answer is yes, then go out and fix it. Period. Stop this childishness and fix it.

If the answer is no, then do not respond to Damien and do not fuel the fire.

?We want a battle in the net. Successful teams have a goaltending controversy all the time,? said Burke. ?We want the guys battling for ice time. We want the guys where Ron has a tough decision: Who?s starting tonight?"

Burke back on or about Jan31/Feb 1 2010 after the Giggy deal went down, I know it's not speaking entirely to this but I kind of doubt Burke or anyone with the Leafs doesn't like the 'net' effect, if you will, of this kind of controversy.

I really don't think this is a black or white issue either.

I did not follow all of the interviews or media questions.  For the most part I heard that the Monster was starting.  It wasn't until a few hours before game time I heard that Reimer was starting.  If Wilson did not state that the goalie choice would be a game time decision, maybe he should have.  It would not have prevented all the guessing and speculation by the media, but I think it would have put RW a better position.

It's amazing that when the Leafs go on a losing streak, all I hear from the media is fire RW.  When the Leafs go on a winning streak, I don't hear too much from the press in giving RW a contract extension.  The praise and criticism should go both ways.  I believe that there is quite a bit of unfair and bias reporting from the media towards the Leafs, regardless how RW and BB deals with the media.

It is sad to see and read sometimes that the truth is not reported on, or facts are hidden or mis-represented to put one or more persons unfairly in bad light.

If i had Wilsons job i would mess with the press a 100 times worse. they craped on the leafs for years, they never printed a positive thing, and now that were so good that were big news they start kissing butt. they nag for every detail, they even make up things, i'm sure the Coach is tired of the crap, and i would be as well. I think its time for the press to grow up and report the team like they should. I know there are a few good one out there but this is directed at the groop of clowns that keep putting there feet in there mouthes.
