Marlies Training Camp Thread

I suspect this is about the Kadri thing, but who knows?

Don Cherry comes out swinging... RT @CoachsCornerCBC: If anyone wants to get a blue print on how to destroy someone, just follow the Leafs

Don Cherry‏@CoachsCornerCBC

I have never in my life seen a kid treated like Nazem Kadri by the Leafs. It started in his first training camp where he led the team in..scoring but was blasted for his defensive faults. They don't blast Kulemin who scored 7 goals. They give him 5 million dollars. Now the... Marlie coach comes out and rips Kadri in the newspaper saying he doesn't eat properly. Imagine headlines saying he's chubby and fatso. If anyone wants to get a blue print on how to destroy someone, just follow the Toronto Maple Leafs

Well, where to begin with Cherry's logic, fact checking and reasoning.  But honestly, I can't say I really blame him and his central message.  I found it strange that someone like Eakins, who appears honorable and a well respected, player-first coach, would come out and release information like that.  To me, discussing Kadri's body composition is strictly an internal matter.

Eakins just answered a question he was asked though.  If he just lied about it and the info that Kadri was scoring low got out, then it would be a big hush hush cover up and things would have gone even more crazy. Should also note that the media were there watching the on-ice conditioning tests and saw Kadri not able to keep up with some of his faster heat mates.  Public information and knowledge right there.

Kadri kind of brought this on himself, IMO.  All summer long he's been interviewed about his time with Roberts, talking about how good he feels and how much it's helped but then goes to camp and they find a body fat issue and he's admitted he doesn't eat very well. He knew all eyes were going to be on him and his fitness levels yet he still chose to ignore how Roberts and pals told him to eat and most likely how the Leafs did as well. It was his choice and now he's kind of paying for it.

Are they "ruining" Kadri? I would suggest the Leafs are being inordinately patient with him and letting him develop vs. throwing him to the wolves at the NHL level and watching him sink.  The only ruining going on is the mountain out of a mole hill analysis that is going on over this.  Kadri will probably be fine in the end but all this insane level of attention is not going to help matters.

Only in Toronto (or possibly Montreal) would there be this much scrutiny of the hockey team. Free agency used to be the only hockey story between the draft and training camp. Now we read about Mike Brown's beard and Kadri's diet.

One of the few topics that I agree with Cherry about.

I agree with Cherry, that he has been mistreated. I don't agree with the statement for Kulemin. I feel Kulemins salary is warranted, and I have no fear with him competing in a Pro environment.

The Kadri issue, IMO, is some misconceptions of where he thought his game should have been till now. He is being himself now, and has proved that he doesn't expect anything to be handed to him on a silver platter, and that he needs to work hard and bulk up his game. That should be enough for him to not only compete at a higher level as well as earn the respect from the Leafs Team.

This is your year to shine Kadri. Prove all them doubters wrong!

All I can say is that Kadri better take his game to the highest level we've seen to date this season. The naysayers will go away.

Corn, while I agree that this whole thing is being overblown, I think it,'s a stretch to suggest Eakins had to respond the way he did.  I also agree that Kadri has to take responsibility for his performance.  But given Wilson and Burke's, shall we say, candid remarks regarding various facets of Kadri's game, it certainly looks like there is some sort of intentional approach going on here.  Call me crazy, but I don't expect my boss to sell me out so directly.  Hell, Farell defended Escobar's outrageous behavior.  Look how Burke reacts to those ESPN reports.  And yet it's open season on Kadri?  I don't know, something doesn't look or smell right here.

jonasTSN1050: Eakins says he's a big Don Cherry fan, but adds that he's never seen him at a Marlie game or practice.  Welcomes him to do so.

Eakins re: Cherry: "He?s a strong-willed guy; I?m sure he believes in everything that he had somebody type for him. I 've never ever seen him at one of our games & I've never ever seen him at a practice & he's never come in and knocked on my door. I invite Don to come on down, 'You're more than welcome at any time. You've got a lot of fans here'. We'd be honoured to have him."

TORONTO ? Marlies coach Dallas Eakins responded with a tactically efficient response to Hockey Night in Canada commentator Don Cherry.

Cherry took to Twitter on Monday afternoon, criticizing the Leafs organization for their handling of the 21-year-old prospect Nazem Kadri, most recently with honest comments about Kadri's fitness testing.

"Now Marlie coach comes out and rips Kadri in the newspaper saying he doesn't eat properly," said Cherry on his verified Twitter account. "Imagine headlines saying he's chubby and fatso.

"If anyone wants to get a blue print on how to destroy someone, just follow the Toronto Maple Leafs."

Eakins addressed Cherry's comments on Wednesday.

"I'm a massive fan of Don Cherry," said Eakins. "When we're playing a night game and Hockey Night in Canada is on, I beg my wife 'Please tape that game' and it's not because I want to watch the game, I want to watch Coach's Corner and I want to watch The Hot Stove. And I always want to see what Don is going to say just like the rest of the nation. The one thing is for sure is Don is an excellent entertainer. He is. He is great at it.

"His comments yesterday I can shake my head at them. I know what the truth is, I know what I believe in. And listen, he's a strong-willed guy; I'm sure he believes in everything that he had somebody type for him."

Entering his third season as the Marlies bench boss, Eakins said that he's never seen Cherry at either a game or a practice and welcomed him to do so.

"I would love for Don Cherry to come down and I invite Don to come down here and sit in my office and hey let's talk about where we're at with our players," said Eakins. "I've never ever seen him at one of our games and I've never ever seen him at a practice and he's never come in and knocked on my door. I invite Don to come on down, 'You're more than welcome at any time. You've got a lot of fans here'. We'd be honoured to have him."

Sarge, I disagree.  To me, Eakins comes off looking sardonic.  He shouldn't have responded at all.  Plus, as I've stated, he should have eaten his humble pie because he was wrong to have used the media as a forum for emabarrasing a what seems to be young and immature player.
