Matthews or BUST

If they can add Matthews and by july 1st Stamkos and a good Dman, they are a goalie away from a playoff berth with a core of ~25 years old.

Eh. Patrick Laine looked pretty freakin' good.

Latest McKeen's rankings have him ranked 1st:

It?s been said many times that Auston Matthews is the ?consensus first pick? since last summer, but therein lies the rub.

Scouts, pundits and fans anointed him as the top guy last summer ? and in many cases seemingly decided that he would be the top guy in the rankings no matter what.

Well there is a ?matter what??a Finnish fellow named Patrik Laine that has more than a couple of scouts reminiscing about a fellow named Mario Lemieux.  It was apparent at the U-20?was noticeable down the stretch in the SM-liiga regular season, and even more apparent during the playoffs ? this kid is scary good, and the closest thing comparable to Mario since?..Mario.

?He looks like Mario when he?s carrying the puck,? noted one top scout during the U-20, and he wasn?t alone in that assertion.  When asked for a comparison, Teemu Selanne brought up Lemieux as well, and McKeen?s chief amateur scout Grant McCagg was making the correlation between the two even before there were others echoing it?he first made the suggestion early on in the World juniors, and he hasn?t changed his mind.  If anything it has only been reconfirmed.

?I can?t honestly recall scouting a forward over 6-4 with a skill set as similar to Mario?s as Laine?s,? says McCagg. ?The way he creates space when he has the puck, his hands, his release, his shot, his vision?maybe he?s not quite at Mario?s level?but he?s not that far off.  He?s a tier above Rick Nash at the same age?and as we know both Nash and Mario were first overall picks. I have a hard time thinking anyone should be drafted ahead of him even if I really like Matthews a lot?I see a future 50-goal NHL scorer, maybe a 60-goal guy. I don?t see that same upside with Matthews.?

Comparing him to Lemieux in any way is clearly clickbait to me, but Laine's sounding pretty good at 2.

So clickbait-y.  I don't see even a tenuous Mario comparison but I am only going off highlights.

I love the "maybe he?s not quite at Mario?s level" quote. Oh, geeze, he's not as good as one of the 3 best humans to ever play hockey? Ya think?

"maybe he?s not quite at Mario?s level?but he?s not that far off."

If that were remotely true wouldn't scouts be talking about him the same way as someone like McDavid?  If you're "not that far off" Lemieux that makes me think you're still a 'generational' level talent.

I wouldn't be disappointed in any way to get Laine. But more from a "we lost the lottery for 1st pick but are picking 2nd" kind of way.

In fact in many ways I think Laine would be a very good addition. Nylander centring Laine could be pretty fun...

This definitely has the feel of a "scout who likes player making hyperbolic statements leading up to draft" type article. If Laine was anywhere near Lemieux in talent, we would have been hearing about him as a potential #1 pick last season or earlier. He's the pretty clear #2 right now - which is obviously not a bad thing.

This is from Corey Pronman (it's an ESPN Insider post) on Matthews:

Matthews is a prospect of equivalent talent to Buffalo's Jack Eichel at the time of Eichel being drafted, and is the favorite to be picked first. Matthews' pure skill level is the highest in this draft class. The things he can do with the puck border on freakish, considering his frame. He also has above-average speed and great hockey IQ. He has been on a tear in the NLA since returning from the WJC. While some may scoff at the league and say his numbers aren't impressive in a global sense, recent studies have shown the NLA has actually surpassed the top Finnish league, and is nearly on par with the AHL, with many ex-NHLers making Switzerland their post-North America destination.

Anyone think if we sign Matthews that the Stamkos thing falls apart?

I was thinking about this, too.  If we add Matthews and Stamkos this summer, where does that leave Nylander?  Surely, we can't give a guy with his talent third line minutes.  Or do we move him to the wing?

Pronman also notes that you can make a reasonable argument for Laine to go 1st overall. No silly comparisons though.

McKeens pfffft.

No Auston?  He's off to (gasp) Boston?  Then let me taste hot death, I solemnly chant.  April 30th is a good day to die.

In order of how pissed off I'd be if another team got first overall would be:

Habs
Oilers
Canucks
Sens
Buffalo
Boston
Calgary
Winnipeg
Carolina
Jersey
Columbus
Colorado

Colorado would be higher on that list for me. I hate seeing incompetent front offices rewarded.

To be fair, the bottom 4 or 5 on the list for me is pretty much interchangeable.  Not really upset if one of Carolina, Jersey, Columbus or Colorado get it.

Leafs on Matthews:

He?s a big, talented guy,? Toronto head coach Mike Babcock said of Matthews. ?But all we know for sure is that we have an 80 per cent chance of not being in on that pick. We know we?re going to get a top-four pick, that?s all we know and we?re going to be ecstatic with whoever we get.

"Some young man's going to be fortunate to get to be a Leaf."

Well, I think when you're in our situation, you're excited about every draft," Leafs team president Brendan Shanahan said.

"The odds are stacked against us that we'll pick first, we understand that." Shanahan said the draft would be at the "backbone" of the team's building project.

Mark Hunter, the Leafs director of player personnel, will be steering the draft for Toronto for the second straight summer. Hunter, a long leader and owner of the London Knights, is known for his ability to scout young talent.

"He's like a dog on a bone," Babcock said. "Even when he tells his wife he's coming home for supper, the truck usually veers and goes to a game, which I really appreciate. And in the end those are the guys that make you good. You need players and the more players you have the better chance you have to be a good coach."

"We know one thing now, we'll be one of (the first) four and we'll prepare accordingly and know where all our other picks are," Lamoriello said.

Fair enough. Probably easier to rank them in groups for me:

Livid: Edmonton

Pretty upset: Montreal, Boston, Colorado, Vancouver

Mildly annoyed: Ottawa, Winnipeg, Buffalo

Don't really care: Columbus, New Jersey, Carolina, Calgary

Somewhat upset: Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Boston

Would bug me a little: Winnipeg, Calgary, Buffalo

The group of meh: New Jersey, Columbus, Colorado

Don't want to see it happen because I think the franchise is close to death and think it would be fun to see the Nordiques back: Carolina

Don't want to see it only because I don't want idiots yelling about conspiracies: Arizona

Kind of secretly want to see it because I think it would be hilarious: Edmonton
