Lindros didn't surprise anyone when he refused to sign with the Nordiques. It was well known as soon as the Nordiques won the pick that Lindros didn't want to play there and they took him anyway.
Matthews waiting until after the Leafs picked him to tell the team he didn't want to sign would make absolutely no sense for any reason. It doesn't benefit him at all. All it does it give the Leafs power over the next few years of his career when he could be earning millions of dollars. If Matthews doesn't want to sign in Toronto he'll tell the Leafs before they pick at which point the team can either trade the pick or draft someone else.
What you're saying isn't just improbable, there's absolutely no reason for it to happen.
