No Auston? He's off to (gasp) Boston? Then let me taste hot death, I solemnly chant. April 30th is a good day to die.
In order of how pissed off I'd be if another team got first overall would be:
Habs
Oilers
Canucks
Sens
Buffalo
Boston
Calgary
Winnipeg
Carolina
Jersey
Columbus
Colorado

He is compared to the Panthers defenceman Aaron Ekblad.
Should the Leafs end up drafting him, they'll be getting not only a top ten but a promising pick nevertheless.

Why is Chychrun or Matthews possibly wanting to play in Miami or Phoenix any more likely than a player from Western Canada or Quebec wanting to play closer to where they were born?
Al14 said:What happens if our Leafs draft Mathews and he refuses to sign with us?
Al14 said:I'm not saying this WILL happen, I'm just worried that it COULD happen.

It could happen with any player born anywhere drafted by anybody. American players are no more likely to want to play close to home than Canadian players or any other player. You don't make decisions at the draft based on what might happen in 7 years. That's just insane.
Al14 said:Ok, I'll take your word on it! We won't get the Lindros treatment from the Matthews camp!
Al14 said:The most recent examples of American born players leaving their team to play closer to home are Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. These two left American based teams too.

Well, it's not like Lindros held out to be closer to home. He just didn't want to play for the Nordiques/in Quebec.

That says a lot to me.

Everett is in Washington State (Google is your friend, you know), and Matthews didn't spurn them simply to not play in the WHL. By playing in Europe in his draft season, he made himself eligible to play in the AHL next season. He felt that it was important that the team who drafts him had that option. Also, you know, he got paid better playing in Switzerland than he would have in the WHL, while learning how to play against full-grown men, rather than teenagers at various levels of physical development. It was a tactical move made for the betterment of his career, nothing more.
