Zaitsev saves a goal.

After a brutal giveaway that led to the scoring chance in the first place.

I rate missed executions a little differently than bad decisions.

Why?  Wouldn't one mean you can't think the game and the other mean you can't actually play the game?

One missed execution, sure.  Several, that's a different story.

Enh. He's still better than Polak.

(Low bar, I know.)

Sure. Although Polak's on a good stretch of games to his standards lately while Zaitsev is on a particular bad stretch, so that makes the comparison a little closer. And if I had to pick a contract I'd take Polak's, even if it came with another 1-year extension.

Because it?s a round disc of rubber on choppy ice bounding off all manner of legs and sticks? Everyone flubs a shot once in awhile. A little patch of ice chips from a stop can alter the puck spin as you?re going through a shot and it wheels off the heel.

Z?s got the physical tools. He doesn?t quite have the confidence in those abilities yet. Aside from his super illness, he recently had a kid and is also playing hurt (according to Mirtle).

Polak for the Masterton. Would be hilarious if Polak wins a major award.  (To go along with his Stanley Cup win this year)

But couldn't the same argument be made for making a bad decision?  It's a quick game where things change in milliseconds.  The Leafs speed is forcing the Panthers in to making bad decisions, but they have some pretty good players.

I think lack of confidence would lead to bad decisions, not poor execution. Also as I type this, I think it's really a grey area what constitutes what.

I'm not saying that Zaitsev is the worst defenceman ever.  However, I think CtB was right about him.  I don't think the Leafs should have committed to him long term the way the did after one season.

I thought it was dumb originally but the penalty for a failed offside challenge has done exactly what it was put in to do.

All over them in the 1st period. Dumb penalties to start the period. Marner Matthews Nylander barely see the ice because of it and Florida gains the momentum.
