Panthers @ Leafs - Mar. 28th, 7:30pm - SN, Fan 590

But couldn't the same argument be made for making a bad decision?  It's a quick game where things change in milliseconds.  The leafs speed is forcing the Panthers in to making bad decisions, but they have some pretty good players.

Our forecheck is forcing suboptimal decisions (dumpmvs carry, for example) and yes, missed executions. I don?t think they?re making bad decisions per se. Net effect is the same results-wise, but the reason and intent are what can be controlled/coached and that?s what Babcock talks about after the games and practices.

I thought it was dumb originally but the penalty for a failed offside challenge has done exactly what it was put in to do.
Whats your opinion on that? Should Babcock have went for the challenge?

I'm not sure why he didn't.  Win it, and the Panthers are deflated.  Lose it, and worst case they score on the PP and it's still a tie game that the Leafs can afford to lose.  Since the Panthers can't, even if it's 3-3 going to the 3rd, advantage Leafs.

If you can't actually do what the coach wanted you to do because you lack the physical gifts that require you do it and that leads to poor execution, that can't be overcome by coaching or repetition.  Not all players are created equally.  The coach may want you to execute a suffocating forecheck, but if you lack the foot speed to beat out the other teams players, you are going to have poor execution.

Zaitsev is having a bad year.  As you say, he may have all the tools that he needs to be a good defencemen, but at some point he has to start using those gifts and executing plays.  If it never comes around then it's the same as a player who has all the physical gifts but makes poor decisions with the puck.

Leafs are continuing their bad habit of taking their foot off the gas in the back half of games.

I think they?re trying to play safe, when they?re most effective when they?re gunning for the opposing net. That said, that opens them up to counter attacks off misses or blocks, so... maybe a slower and steadier puck holding play (shorter passes) would help. They know Florida is going to want to stretch it open, and that should give them opportunities to counter if they?re patient.

That?s good work there. Play starts off the dump in with Brown keeping in the retrieval with a little head fake to buy time.
