Phil Kessel

-Which GM could say he was doing his job if he wasn't 'listening' to offers for any and all of his players whenever they are made?

I think it'd be pretty common. I don't think, for instance, you could ever get Ray Shero to say that he was listening to offers for Crosby or Malkin.

Regardless, the impression I got from Dreger is that this is somewhat more involved than you seem to be saying.

-The offers Nonis is getting for Kessel are probably all lowball offers from GMs trying to capitalize on his goalscoring slump.

For what it's worth, Dreger went out of his way to specifically say that this wasn't related to Kessel's slump.

The segment is up at tsn.ca if anyone's interested.

For what it's worth, Iginla and Hemsky have been on the trading block and their GM's have supposedly been listening to offers since 2010

Not much of an endorsement of either player, is it?

That depends on how you take the fact that neither have been traded.

I suppose, except there's really no way around it being a situation where a team thinks their player is more valuable than any other team in the league does.

Naturally.

Sorry, I didn't mean with respect to the scoreboard. I meant with respect to the quality of play.

Like, would it be more troubling if Kessel's shots were missing the net by feet, giving us the impression that he'd simply forgotten how to play hockey? Yes, I suppose that would be indicative of worse play but the standard I'm holding him to is one of a NHL player where missing by inches is what separates the good ones from the bad ones.

I would argue that getting scoring chances as opposed to getting no scoring chances at all separates the good ones from the bad ones.

I'd counter that if you're not getting any scoring chances at all you're not going to be a NHL player for long.

I don't think a 10 game slump will effect his trade value.

It won't. Fans like to overstate the impact slumps have on trade values, but, most GMs know better. His trade value isn't significantly different than it was all summer, with the only real significant influences on it right now being the changes in the cap system.

Yeah I mean look at Raycroft! Lol

Dave Steckel doesn't have a shot on goal yet.

Kessel has 6 points so far.  That's not too far off of a point-per-game pace and that's all that matters to me.  He has played quite well and has been plagued by great goaltending and bad luck.  How many posts has he hit now?

7 points in 11 games isn't exactly close to a point-per-game pace either. That's a solid .64 ppg (even less than a 2/3 ppg)

Me too, for now. I'd really prefer to see him back up near a ppg, or over .8 ppg at least. I think he needs Lupul back for that though.

Agreed... Or at least more time/opportunity to gel with JvR.

Kessel's going to score 7 points in his next 4 games now. He's just going to torch Montreal tomorrow night as well. Such is such for a streaky player like Kessel.
