As someone who has had concussions myself, this seems standard protocol. Once symptoms start to fade (which is the hard part - my first only lasted 1 week, but my second lasted nearly 3 months), then you start ramping up activity starting with a 15 minute "low impact" workout, like riding a stationary bike or skating around with no contact. If that's good and you're symptom free, you keep adding 5 minutes each day until you reach 30 min. Then you resume normal practices, etc, and if still symptom free, then he would be cleared to play.
I don't know how he fared today, but if it went well, my guess it he could be back in the lineup in about 10-14 days.
