Rielly was pretty good tonight,

Huh?  He was -3 and he was -3 because he deserved to be -3.  Franson didn't help him much, to be sure.  But Rielly is definitely not NHL-ready on the defensive side.

He's more ready than Gardiner based on what I've seen.

So much the worse for Gardiner.

If every kid could adjust their game as fast as Rielly did.  From start to finish, he was a much better defenseman at the end.
Defense should also be a team concept.  Lupul, Franson, Kadri were on for those three goals as well.  Brodie was on for one, Abbott for two.  Maybe not the perfect partners to let a rookie get his feet wet with.  Abbott got hooked.
Reimer didn't help Reilly's cause.
Carlyle didn't cut his ice-time, an Rielly looked more confident for it.

Despite scoring, Lupul isn't where he should be with all aspects of his game. He definitely needs to pick it up.

Yeah he's not the same Lupul we've grown to know here in Toronto.  Wonder if those back spasms he had in training camp are still bothering him?

I was originally in favour of playing JVR and Lupul on their current lines, but that was with Clarkson and Kulemin in the line-up and with the assumption that Lupul and Kadri could mesh again together. But with those two players out and that pair looking pretty atrocious defensively, I think I would try playing Lupul on the top line and JVR with Kadri. I think it would create a more balanced line-up and hopefully give a boost to Kadri and Lupul.

As long as that doesn't disturb the top lines mojo. I think it's going good with that trio right now, I'd be hesitant to remove JvR.

Well Lupul's got a pretty good history on that line as well of course. And while I think the top line has definitely looked good so far, they aren't exactly lighting things on fire. 3 combined goals in 3 games.

He does and if it was anyone other than Lupul, I'd have said no. But I just didn't want it to be a consequence for JvR, as he is doing what he needs to do, vs letting Lupul find his own game.

If the top line was terrible, I think Carlyle would have made a change already, but I agree with you in that the they aren't ripping up the league or anything.

Any forensics investigations on this goal by Eugene?

I've watched it a few times and I think it's ok. The puck kept moving. No different than Datsyuk faking a shot then pulling it back between his legs then toe-dragging, etc.
