Tank Nation: Matthews Edition

It's April 3rd and Todd McLellan is still trying to establish a "work ethic" for his team. Babcock did that in a weekend in September.

The conclusion I draw us that it wasn't Eakins who was at fault.

Gonna be a fun offseason. I think the Oilers are gonna do something stupid. If the Bruins miss they'll do something stupid too.

I really wonder what we'd have to add to get Edmonton to say yes to a Hall for JVR+ trade.

... And chiarelli is going to be busy this off season. This team is more than one move away from being less of a train wreck.

Chiarelli doesn't have a choice but to make a bunch of moves. The team has stood pat for so long on this core. Definitely some opportunities for other teams if history is any indicator of his thought process regarding young players.

It doesn't matter where the leafs finish. They're not getting that pick.

It drives me nuts listening to talking heads in the radio saying 'leafs can't even lose right' last I checked this team was still dead last in row... It's not like they had this magical turnaround and are on a blazing winning streak. It's the other teams that drove their trucks off the cliff.

Drives me nuts when people say stuff like that. It's a simple mathematical probability. That may get the pick, they may not.

I know statistically they have a shot at the pick. My non mathematical gut is telling me they won't get it.

I think that if(and I agree it might should be "when" at this point) Edmonton makes a move with one of their big pieces A) it'll be RNH or Eberle rather than Hall and B) They'll have to get defense back.

Reassure your gut that they'd also had no chance at Babcock. ;)

I could see them wanting to add a new dimension to their top-6 forwards though too. They've openly talked about wanting to get bigger and stronger, and while JVR isn't exactly the hulking power forward he comes with more of a hard "battler" reputation.

But yeah, defence will likely be their primary target. And I also don't think they should be trading Hall, but I can see the organization (the ones who put themselves in this mess in the first place) souring on him almost like the Leafs soured on Phil.

That's way too logical a way to look at how the Oilers are going to approach things.

Its funny, but wasn't there a time not long ago when fans were proposing trading some of our 'D' for some of their offence? I don't think there is (or probably never was) a deal that would make sense for both sides. On top of that we need more 'D' ourselves now. Would a Gardiner or Reilly for Matthews (should they win the lottery) make sense to anyone?

I can't see the Oilers doing that...if Mathews turns out to be a star, they would have egg on their face for years to come, similar to the trades that past Leaf GM's have made.

Well, your gut is probably right, because if they finish last overall, there's an 80% chance they don't get the pick.

That's because you still harbor a belief that, given any statistical opportunity the Leafs have to "win", that the Leafs could
indeed "win" such an opportunity.

It's not a belief. It's a fact.

Gardiner alone wouldn't get it done, he'd have to be part of an overwhelming package that we don't have.

Rielly alone neither, I suspect.  I wouldn't trade him anyway, he's going to be a very very good dman for at least another 10 years and probably more.  We know what we have in Rielly.  As good as Matthews may turn out to be, we don't know what that is for sure.

First thing I thought of reading this was the idea floated last year of Hall for Rask.

Nice 5-1 win for Winnipeg last night suits us just fine. Could be their last points of the season though. We'd have to win 3 of our last 4 to have a better record than them now.

Our final placing is heavily reliant on those Edmonton v Vancouver games and our one against Columbus (or us not winning any others if we beat Columbus).

The Leafs are now fairly comfortably in 29th place. And with Kadri done for the season I can't see them doing any better than that.

Both Toronto and Edmonton are at 67 points. The Leafs have 4 games left, Oilers have 2. The Leafs will lose the tie-breaker if it comes to that.

So if Edmonton goes 1-1 in their final 2 games (playing Vancouver in both, so that's likely) and the Leafs go 1-3 in their final 4 games (again no Kadri, so likely) the Leafs will finish in 30th place. We really just need Edmonton to pick up at least 2 more points.

Hopefully the Leafs run with Sparks for the rest of the year. He's pretty low on confidence right now, and self-loathing is like jet fuel for the Tank.
