Actually no, they were embarrassingly bad long before they started stripping the team for parts. The Franson-Santo trade wasn't until Feb. 14, after the Leafs lost 2-1 to the Habs. Prior to that, they were something like 2-15 under Horacheck, including a honey of a stretch where they went 0-6 against all non-playoff teams, being out-scored 14-6. Since they started stripping parts, they are actually 6-13-2. Of course there was an embarrassing seven game losing stretch in there, including a horrific west coast trip. Even with Carlyle there were a few embarrassing nights including the debacle in Nashville and the 5-1 lost to Winnipeg where they looked like boys against men and it was the last game Carlyle coached. Let's just say there has been enough embarrassment to go around with this lot and be done with it.Nik the Trik said:Even the Leafs were bad but not embarrassingly so until they started stripping their team for parts.princedpw said:It doesn't really matter how they got to the bottom, the teams at the bottom are really bad.
Agreed, it seems like some of these guys aren't conditioned enough either. The top line disappeared last year after the all-star break as well. Maybe Gary Roberts should be coaching this lot...Chris said:Some people seem to conveniently forget that the free-fall was well established long before the trades and injuries hit. It actually started before Carlyle was even fired.

I was just reminded about this: The Penguins traded their 1st to Edmonton for Perron. They're the only potential non-playoff team to have traded their pick. Could you imagine if it was McDavid for Perron and the Oilers picked 1st and 3rd?

I'm afraid that ship has officially sailed. The Leafs have 65 points. Edmonton has 59 with 3 games left. So even if the Oilers go 3-0 and the Leafs lose out they'll both have 65 points but Edmonton will "win/lose" the tiebreaker keeping them in 3rd.

Yeah, that's not what I mean. If Edmonton wins the lottery with Pittsburgh's pick, they'd clearly bump their own 3rd pick down to 4th.

I heartily endorse this approach of franchise suicide. Also, Arizona should seriously consider it as well.

The last game of the season is probably going to have playoff implications for the Habs. Staying ahead of Tampa and having home-ice advantage in the 2nd round is going to be more important than giving those guys one extra game of rest.

- It's going to be tough for Carolina to lose against Buffalo who still have a tenuous grasp on 1st overall.
- Carolina has a pretty good shot at taking out a Philadelphia team playing for nothing in their 2nd last game of the year
- Detroit may well be playing for nothing in Game 82
- Columbus is 13-3-0 in their last 16 games and are going to be tough for the Leafs to beat
- Montreal is actually playing for a lot in Game 82 with Tampa 2 points back and a shot at 1st in the conference/league too.
