The Brian Burke Thread

Sometimes Burke needs to shut up (even if it is just behind closed doors).  Chastise my players all you want, but question my coach and I get angry.

That whole act he has with e media has grown thin... shut up and just be a GM, not some kind of babysitter... grow up already

Not gonna happen... He's been that way his entire career.

So let me get this straight... this is a rumor and there are no quotes from Burke about him being unhappy with Cherry, and he is THINKING about complaining to Cherry's bosses.  So nothing has actually happened.

.... and we are unhappy with Burke over doing what exactly?

I have no idea what people are unhappy about. - Even if this is true.

Might be the same people who dislike Don Cherry and say that the game and society has passed him by.

So what if RW forgot to applaud the troops.  I am sure RW like a lot of us are thankful to our troops and appreciate the sacrifies they have made as well as those who are no longer with us.  Every now and then I am sure that all of us have forgotten to say 'thank you' to someone.  It happens, but the last time I checked the world is still spinning and hasn't come to an end.

I don't have a problem with RW forgetting or Cherry for commenting on it.  What I do have an issue with is irresponsible reporting:  unjustly criticizing the players, coaches, managers etc. or conversely, not criticizing organization members when there is an actual need to do so.

Agreed.

But my favourite part about this is when Ron brought it up on CC last night and twice Cherry said that he wouldn't talk about it only to proceed to say something about it both times.

I agree, even if it is true, Cherry does need to shut up. I think when Cherry was ask, he himself said Burke has to get in line, so it's not just Burke that wants him to shut up.

If I was the GM, I wouldn't want people slamming my team either. Burke has enough respect for the game not to comment on these rumours over the All Star weekend. If it does turn out to be true, good for Burke, the guy is irrelevant.

It's sad because Cherry does at times have decent things to say, but he can't get past his ego most the time and makes an ass out of himself.

There has to be some balance when it comes to reporting.  If I were GM, I would not appreciate undue criticism directed toward my team either, but I would be okay with the criticism directed toward me as long as it was fair and warranted.  Chances are, Burke and any other half decent GM will realize when they make a bone-headed decision whether it be a trade, a signing or refusing to make a trade.  The results of that decision will be apparent on the ice.

You don't think Burke is usually accepting of fair criticism? I think he is.

That's actually where I do kind of have an issue (and, I imagine, if there's any truth to it, Burke does as well) - partly because of the way Cherry tends to go on about these things, but, mainly because applauding or not applauding the troops has absolutely nothing to do with Ron Wilson's job, and bringing it up is really just an attack on him personally. It's the kind of thing that someone in the hockey media, who is supposed commenting on hockey-related issues, should not be bringing up on that personal a level.

I liked Ron's musing about whether Burke was trying to steal Don for Rogers. :)

Yeah, and the fact that Cherry couldn't tell Ron was joking made it even better.

In fairness I think he was a bit flustered/seniored by the whole thing and was putting up his defenses but yeah, he said something like 'I'll have to think about what you said' at the end and that was worth the price of admission alone.

Burke interviewed on the Strombo show, part where he starts talking about his son is difficult to watch as Burke gets choked up.

Great interview. How can one not cheer for this man in everything he does?

Media don't tend to criticize their own fraternity, unless there is widespread opportunity - someone screws up so bad its news everywhere. Other than that, you generally don't see it because reporters are nervous about the target being turned back on them.
