The Official Movie Thread

I had a few hours to kill on Sunday and this and Thor were both starting at the same time. While I was walking around beforehand I was listening to Kermode and Mayo film review show off BBC Radio which is a really great show and Kermode described it as "really shoddy, really ill-conceived, spectacularly messy, thunderously boring".

So I went for Thor and it was great fun.

Disney just bought most of Fox's entertainment properties (movies and tv shows) for 52.4B.

i.e. MCU just gained the FF (blegh) and all the mutants.

Most importantly:
DEADPOOL + SPIDERMAN!

I'm not even sure that I would want this. A combination of these two would likely result in a pretty watered down version of Deadpool. I actually hope that they keep the X-Men and Deadpool in their own separate universe.

The FF and Galactus should definitely be in the MCU though. This is actually perfect timing as Marvel will need a new big-bad in their next phase once Thanos is taken care of.

You're right (of course). I foresee them setting up some well partitioned streams, with the occasional cameo crossover. FF and the X-stories need to be rebuilt and their universes established.

Spider-man could be the gateway character to the FF universe, as he's buds with Johnny Storm and subbed in for the team on occasion; he's also the character that hinges on Family, Science, and Responsibility. Doom as the new Loki and Galactus as the next mega threat to bring everyone together for team-ups makes sense.

FF and Dr. Strange also open up universe/dimension hopping shenanigans, which would easily add a rebooted X-series. I would also want to see how the MCU handles the Phoenix saga, because so far it has been terrible. Maybe a reboot where the Phoenix Force passing by triggers the X-gene because it has been scouring the universe looking for a suitable host.

Also (and possibly more importantly) Disney acquiring Fox eliminates all the stupid distribution shenanigans related to the original Star Wars movies - because, for some reason, Fox held the rights for all of them - including A New Hope in perpetuity.

Of all of the Marvel properties that Fox had the one I'm probably most excited about joining the Marvel universe proper is probably the idea of Noah Hawley's rumoured Dr. Doom movie.

Galactus is a tough go for me as a big villain because A) he's not really villainous and B) what works in the comic(a huge guy in a goofy pink helmet) I don't know translates onto the screen.

On the other hand Dr. Doom is probably the best villain in all of comics.

That is an interesting question because they're already shooting Singer's version of the Dark Phoenix saga. You wonder if Disney would shut that down and lose whatever has already invested in favour of bringing it in house(and potentially avoiding any Bryan Singer-related news that we might get any day).

They've already completed filming for it. Anything at this point would be reshoots, etc. I don't imagine Disney doing much with it, except maybe tacking on a post-credit scene that potentially opens the door to bringing the X-Men into the MCU.

Yeah but given how...not good the last Singer X-Men movie was my point was still if this isn't a major step up would they maybe scrap the whole thing rather than let their first big X-Men release be sort of terrible. Especially when it's such a big-deal story.

I suppose that depends on what the studio execs think of the rough cut of the movie they get shown - and, well, as we know, studio execs often aren't so bright. Unless they decided to let the Marvel Cinema guys take the helm right out of the gate, I imagine we won't see much change.

Maybe but the question of whether or not Disney wants to put out anything that might affect their new plans(whatever that may be) with their own universe might even supersede issues of the quality of any one movie.

Possibly. I imagine they'll use it as an opportunity to complete the trilogy before they reboot their version of the X-Men.

Black Panther was the best comic book movie since TDK.

I haven't watched it yet, but I already know Shuri will be my favourite.

The whole cast is terrific but yeah she stole every scene that she was in. Which is really saying something as she was often with Boseman and/or Nyong'o.
