The Official TFC/Soccer thread

So let's get this straight: Ryan Nelsen has no coaching experience. Absolutely none. In fact, the 35 year old still under contract as a defender with Queen's Park Rangers and may not be eligible to join TFC until May.

What the hell? We're hiring a coach who's literally still a player and has no experience coaching ever?

No wonder TFC has just hired their 8th coach in 7 years. What a disaster.

Nothing about the TFC sounds sensible (not that it ever was).

This is absurd...playing soccer in a snowstorm...uh?...

I watched that game at the bar, it got really crazy in the final 25 minutes.

The rules as I understood them where about visibility, ability to see the lines and player safety.

After the 65 minute mark it was farcical, there appeared to be at least half a foot of snow on the pitch. At one point a team had a free kick and you could barely see half of the ball above the snow.

The flip side is the refs wanted to call the game and both teams wanted to play on.  Costa Rica only started whining after they lost.

So far, things are looking more positive for the TFC in spite of their 1-0-2 record this season.  New coach, new system,  new hopes.

The TfC, sporting a 1-2-1 record (after drawing the L.A. Galaxy to a 2-2 tie last weekend), has signed two Argentine players -- Urruti & an  unnamed midfielder), to add to it's lineup.

TFC's next game is, by the way, on Saturday (April 6th) when they host Western Conference leaders FC Dallas.

Great comeback for the Toronto FC against FC Dallas at BMO Field, as the TFC came back on goals from Justin Braun & Jarel Russell, to tie FC Dallas 2-2.

I turned this game on about 5 minutes before the 2nd Dallas goal. I figured it was all over at that point. Braun's 1st minutes of the year gave the crowd some life after he banked one in off the post. Darel Russell's goal should end up in the Goal of the Week voting. Not bad from the guy who cost TFC the win against LA last week with a poor defensive clearance.

Still a long way to go, but after being 0-9 last year I'll take 5 points in 5 games so far.

So far, that record is a relief!  :)

TFC got their first road point of the season last Saturday, tying the Philadelphia Union 1-1.

The tie illustrates what is inherently flawed with this club -- the TFC played well first half, then was incapable of going further (a.k.a. "adjusting") and being adaptive as the Union became, in their game plan.

TFC watchers call this "Plan B", and what with the current roster that stills lacks enough talent and depth (the kinds of players who can get it done), the coaching staff has been given praise in spite of everything....

They?ve taken what is still a poor overall squad and got them to a basic level of competitiveness.

What?s needed to take that next step is something that?s a lot harder to coach, and will probably rely more on new players to improve the quality of options available to him: the intelligence and creativity on an individual basis to be able to adapt, to improvise and break away from the plan. It?s needed not just for being able to react to changes in an opponent?s game plan, but also to create chances going forward.

For the 2nd week in a row TFC gives up a late goal and ends up with a 1-1 draw at home against Houston Dynamo. TFC has a history of giving up goals in the last 10-15 minutes of games, and it seems like the trend is continuing. What makes this one even more frustrating is the fact that Houston was down to 10 men from the 62nd minute onwards. Yes they have 7 points after 7 games, but losing points in the final minutes 2 weeks in a row is frustrating. TFC heard a chorus of boos as they left the pitch Saturday.

Wouldn't blame the fans for the booing.  When I saw the high lights of the game, I, too thought, oh no, not again!

This team needs continuous improvement and adjustment, but, as stated previously, with the current roster, doubt that will happen so fast.  The fans' patience will certainly continue to be tested!

The biggest issue to me was that Houston scored being a man down. The biggest test is coming as counting the Houston game the Reds have 6 games in 18 days with the final 2 being at Colorado and San Jose. Also in that stretch is a home and home against Montreal in the opening round of the Canadian Championship.

So, Toronto FC, it's been awhile, how are things going?

In one word, simply...awful.

The TFC lost it's fourth straight Saturday, 1-0  to the Columbus Crew at BMO Field.

The TFC (1-6-4) are currently winless in nine games (five losses and four ties) and sport just one win dating back 25 games to last season.  Oh Lord, help this team!

TFC breaks an 11-game winless streak by defeating DC United 2-I at BMO field on Saturday.  Whew!  Call it a relief!

Gave up the 1st goal on a cheap penalty call, but they didn't fold. They managed a comeback, on the road no less, and got a lucky bounce on a free kick for the winner. The shot was headed to the back post and deflected in off a DC defender.  Hopefully this will spark a turn in fortunes, along with the return of Danny Kovermans to the lineup. He was in the gameday roster against DC but was not called upon.

A roof over BMO field?  A stadium enhancement project...

Some positive news for Toronto FC soccer fans and especially for the beleaguered franchise, already well out of a playoff spot -- the TFC's 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution this past weekend on the Revolution's home turf -- helped the team on a modest 2 game win streak.

At least, even if the playoffs seem out of reach at this point in the schedule, building up some momentum is certainly something to look forward to, in what is shaping up to be yet another disappointing season.

Here's the story on their latest win:
