Was "Superstorm Sandy" the result of global warming?  Many scientists are not in agreement, but, there are a few facts to consider:
      - elevation of sea level(s). New York's water level has risen a foot higher (0.3m) in 100 years
        - elevated ocean temperatures.  The Atlantic Ocean's water temperature is 2 degrees warmer than it's been in over a century
        -  warm water is fuel for hurricane formations, which is why the warmer temperatures sent Sandy's trajectory northward (via a warmer Gulf Stream that stretches from the Carribean to Ireland).

What is more disturbing is that in just one month this year alone, there have been alreadyba total of 19 storms, whereas that was the total for the past two years combined.

What caused Sandy to veer westward (towards New Jersey)?  High (Arctic)? air pressure that blocked it's normal easterly(out to sea) path.

Scientists do agree that on account of warmer overall temperatures, there will be stronger and more prolonged storms in place of fewer hurricanes.  Also that these type of storms will become more frequent, presenting themselves every 3 to 20 years.

Yeah, that sharp left turn was caused by a blocking high that was a lot further south than usual, and was speculated to be possibly a result of there being less ice in the Arctic this year than ever recorded (read this on a tropical weather blog at wunderground.com).

Now to add insult to injury, apparently there could be a moderate strength Nor'easter developing by the middle of this week that could give them more wind and rain.

On a more mundane local note, the cooling trend at night has made me decide to put up plastic over the windows. Had to remove the blinds and put up curtains to do it, but it made a huge difference - last night the temperature in the spare bedroom was about 1.5 degrees higher than it had been for the rest of this week....

How bad are the windows in this place? Bad enough that the plastic covering them moves in with the wind. Yikes.

Have got probably close to 30 cm of snow in the last few days, and a few cm's more to come.  Windchill is in the -28 range right now.

Real winter at last.  :)
 
Same here. Windchill -29 right now, hit -36 yesterday.

I shoveled the snow three times. Starts to lose it's beauty after that. :)
 
I'm in northwestern Ontario. Potvin's northernish, but I don't consider him truly north because he's below the 49th.

You torontonians need to realize two things:
1. 95% of Canada is above the 49th parallel, and
2. Barrie is not in the north.

But the majority live below the 49th Parallel

But who am I to talk, I'm actually considering moving to Calgary!

we consider ourselves 'Central Ontario'. To me, 'northern' Ontario starts in like, North Bay/Sudbury area :)

Yeah, North Bay is kinda the over/under line.

North of North Bay is Northern Ontario.

South of North Bay is Ontario.

I spent 6 years of my youth in Val Gagne, Ontario and I considered that North.

Must suck to live in Edmonton. (<--that's a dig against my brother-in-law)

But when you get Superior's weather, you can call yourself northern.

I'll give you that. I actually do consider Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury to be in Northeastern Ontario, but anything south of that is definitely not northern.

Edmonton's not any worse than Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie. Gets quite a bit less snow than both of them and around same temps as SSM. Thunder Bay's colder than both of them (average of 4C lower than them both in the winter.) SSM gets tonnes of snow from being on the east side of Superior. Generally the further away you are from Hudson's Bay the warmer you get.
