Trade deadline moves

Even with the possible subtractions Zaitzev/Gardiner/Hainsey/Brown we still can't add any meaningful salary. Any talk of anyone with term just doesn't add up.

The Leafs are going to pay Martin Marincin 1.25 million next year to be the #8 defenseman?
Just use the link as context Nik... 1.25M doesn't exactly move the needle. Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson numbers probably low too.

I don't need a link that wildly overestimates how much the Leafs are going to pay 4th liners to know they'll have a tough cap situation next year.

But if you have 4th liners at a reasonable rate and move on from Brown then it's a better situation than you're suggesting.

Heck, the link doesn't even have some of the existing contracts right.

Show me your projection where we can add someone at $3M and retain Johnsson and Kapanen. I don't really see how it's possible.

Assuming the Leafs trade Zaitsev/Brown and didn't take any cap hits back in return, signed Marner to $9.5mil, signed Kapanen/Johnsson to $3mil each, and filled the rest of the line-up with cheap Marlies and had only a 22-man roster, they'd have about $2mil in cap space to play with.

It's not exactly a ton, but if the team does acquire some sort of impact player it's almost a certainty that one of Johnsson or Kapanen would have to be involved, so that means we could acquire a guy with up to a $5mil AAV.

Exactly my point. To add anyone with term, the cost will be dear.

I didn't say they could, all I said was that the link was nonsense.

Again, we all know they're in a tough cap spot next year. Nobody has seriously suggested they're adding a significant piece today.

This is Johnson reporting what other executives think might be happening, so not really something totally concrete. But still...

It's such an odd feeling - it's sometimes really hard to divest yourself from rooting for the players who just got traded. Like part of me doesn't want anyone of consequence to leave because I like most of them. We'll see what happens and who goes. I wonder if Naz would've been dangled as trade bait if he didn't have a concussion.

I know some people wouldn't be thrilled but I really wouldn't be surprised to see Kapanen maybe get moved.

I think it would depend on what they expect contract wise and that's why Dubas talked to both agents. If they're looking for 5 mill or something ridiculous, I can see him being traded.

TOR will call up Trevor Moore for tonight's game vs BUF.

Someone is getting moved. Hold me guys

Even if it's 4 million or 3.5, at some point you have to ask how much you want to pay a 3rd line RW especially if you have someone like Bracco who might very well need a look in an offensive role going forward.

It's not just a cap thing, it could be a real example of dealing from a position of strength to address a weakness and alleviate some cap concerns.

If it's to get a good young top-4 D I honestly don't know why people would be upset. I mean I do, but I don't.

Agree, totally.
