If I'm Nonis I'm blowing up the whole team. I keep Frattin, Kadri, Phaneuf and the goalies. Everyone else is gone.
I'd keep Lupul over Phaneuf. JVR is also pretty young and talented.
Unless the return is pretty huge for some pieces on this team (I doubt many teams would pony up what we'd all think is fair value) there's really no point to blowing it up.
I'd move Grabbo, Kuli, Mac, any D man not named Gardiner, and maybe Kessel. Thing is we'd get cents on the dollar for most of them and where does that get us?
There are at least 4 guys worth 1st round picks at the trade deadline. Start from scratch. This team isn't built for Carlyle hockey, and I don't see Nonis dumping the coach.
Um ok.
So who are they? Obviously Kessel, JVR, Lupul and Phaneuf. Mac (maybe) and?
What teams are trading for these guys and where will those draft picks be? My guess is probably 20-30 overall.
So we gut our team of young, very talented 30 goal scorers (JVR, Kessel) and a guy who's really looking like a nice player (Lupul) for.....? More Stuart Percy's and Tyler Biggs? Lottery tickets with terrible odds to add exactly the type of young, talented forwards we already have?
In my view there are things wrong with this team, but they're not the players who could return us anything anyways. Grabbo, Kuli, Bozak as #1, money tied up in Komi, lack of a bonafide #1, bunch of AHL'ers playing D in the NHL, Carlyle's insistence on #1 line getting more PP and ES time than Kadri's line etc. Those are the things that are holding this team back from being a solid perennial playoff contender.
Give it a year or 2. Gardiner, Rielly, Kadri with more beef on him, bit more time to see what we have in Biggs/Percy/Blacker/Ross et al and this team can move a large bunch of extraneous pieces for actual needs. We'll also finally have a final say on the Goaltending situation which has run hot and cold (Freezing ATM).
I'm trying to think of a team in recent (or at any time) that had a young roster like ours, with proven NHL firepower, that up and moved them all for a shot at what can be a crapshoot, even with the #1 overall.
