I'm thinking maybe Freddie is still getting over his injury so they have a chance to give him some extra time?Hobbes said:That's an odd choice since we have a back-to-back on Thurs-Fri so you'd think he gets one of those as well.Highlander said:Campbell starts tomorrow in San wherever.

Thou shalt not start versus your former team

CarltonTheBear said:I have high hopes for Liljegren as a NHL defender, I do, but I don't think he's ready this season. He's played 11 games so far. He had a CF over 50% in just 3 of those and they came in his first 4 games. This is where he falls among the Leafs 8 defencemen in a bunch of stats during Ceci's injury (5-on-5):
8th in TOI/GP (9:28)
8th in CF/60 (43.06)
7th in CA/60 (60.16)
8th in CF% (41.72)
6th in GF/60 (1.9)
7th in GA/60 (4.43)
8th in GF% (30.00)
8th in xGF/60 (1.45)
8th in xGA/60 (2.79)
8th in xGF% (34.18)
I think a part of this is just mental/confidence, which is somewhat understandable. He's jumping into a team in a pretty high pressure situation. Hopefully that's not as much of an issue when he's competing for a spot in camp next season and early in the year.
For as bad as we think Ceci is, in the 10 games prior to his injury at least he was breaking even in CF (exactly 50%) and had a slightly positive xGF (51.44%) while playing a lot more minutes.

There's no veteran to pair him with, the blueline is not deep enough to be able to limit the quality of his opponents as much as I'm sure they'd like, etc. He and Sandin have basically been thrown into the deep end, and, while Sandin has managed to stay afloat, Liljegren hasn't so much.
CarltonTheBear said:Well he's been sheltered in terms of his minutes/usage, but yeah maybe having a veteran to play beside him would have been nice. Still, he likely won't be paired with one next season either if he makes the team so it's something he'll need to figure out.

The way he's been sheltered is not one that's going to help his development particularly. He needs to be able to play 15+ minutes a night, and, as things are right now, there's no way to do that comfortably.

I'm not shocked that this is your take ;D
