That basically guarantees he?s back

I mean it's not even a "Blundell" scoop... it's written by a guy named Shug. Shug for gods sake!

Maybe "Shug" is a pseudonym for Kyle Dubas hmmm?

I suspect the 'little birdie' that provided the information is a concussion related hallucination.

I thought the term "little birdie" went out with the Big Band Era.

Not sure what he means by the leafs eating 2M....after they pay his signing bonus he's only owed 1.25M in real dollars.  Can you retain cap hit and not dollars?

Yes, you can retain cap hit.

Retaining cap and salary is based on a percentage rather than a fixed amount. So, if the Leafs were to retain $2M of Marleau's cap, they'd retain the equivalent percentage of his actual salary.

I don't see how retaining any salary/cap height is going to move the needle much on the value, assuming the team getting him has the cap room (and I suppose that's the real question.) After his $3M signing bonus, he's only owed $1.25M in salary. Just about any team can justify that for a player of his ability.

If we're talking about a situation where he still wants to play and allows a trade to a contender like San Jose we would absolutely need to retain salary since they can't afford a $6mil 4th liner for the same reasons we can't.

The real dollars are a non-issue, agreed. It's the cap hit that's the problem. That's where retaining some might make him a more palatable trade option, and could reduce/eliminate the need for a sweetener to be thrown in. For example, it's much easier to justify a 3rd/4th line winger that puts up ~30 points if they come with a ~$3.5M cap hit than with a $6.25M cap hit. Unless Marleau's willing to waive his NMC to go to a team that taking him on as a cap write-off (which feels unlikely), the Leafs will need to eat some cap.

Heard Dreger said the Leafs offered 2.1 per for 2 years and 2.6 per for 4 years at the deadline for Johnsson and he turned it down. There's no way he can get over 2.5 and that's pushing it. He's played 1 year in the NHL.

Arbitration? Is that still a thing?

Yup, he's eligible for arbitration.

$2.1m per for 2 years, but, yeah, somewhere around $2.5m on a shorter deal seems about right.

I have a hard time thinking any contender will want him at 4 million. The only way out of his contact may be to convince him to go to a floor team.

And that's not happening. He wants to win so the team he could potentially go to has to be a really good contender.

Looks at Zaitsev contract and runs away

It sure is hard for me to imagine it, but it could happen. It would have to get ugly though.

His cap hit is pretty ugly.
