2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

My Canadian friends who made it to Arizona for the winter are saying nobody are wearing masks anywhere and people are living their lives as normal.  Covid is of course running rampant but no one seems to care.

Outside of liberal cities I'd say this is true.

The states are running with the herd. We?re building our dams and staying close and safe like good little beavers.

EDIT. And this just in ? U.S. CDC advises Americans to avoid travel to Canada, cites pandemic? Are you kidding me? LMAO

Matthews voted in as captain for the Atlantic division all-star team and Jack Campbell gets in as a goalie! What a year for him.

Freddie Andersen gets in for Carolina as well.

Tavares is a candidate for the fan vote-in.

Nylander is not.  >:(

That's got to be most of the team by now, right?

Matthews*, Bunting, and Clifford** are the only players on the roster now who haven't been placed in protocol in the last month. Possibly some of the Marlies on the Taxi Squad as well but I know they had a ton of positives down there too earlier.

*had a false positive

**had it in early November when he was with the Blues

So the leafs are,
I would say, kind of in a slump for the first time since the start of the season and are 3-1-1 in that stretch. So things could be worse, but still getting points with bad habits could be a worrying trend.

Anyway, I?ll chalk it up to the big layoff and the people in and out of the lineup. Campbell is also starting to look a little normal as well.

The biggest worry for me is if the season ended today we?d be facing the Lightning in the first round. That matchup doesn?t breed a lot of confidence in finally getting to the 2nd round of the playoffs. Let?s hope that changes.

There isn?t an opponent that is going to breed confidence with this plauyoff format.

Right now finish first the Eastern Conference and play Boston (10th in the NHL in point percentage)

Finish 2nd in the East but 1st in the division and play 9th place Pittsburgh.

Finish 2nd in the division and play 4th place Tampa.

The East is stupidly stacked compared to the West this year.

This format really doesn't reward doing well in the regular season.

I?ve already ranted several times about the playoff format and the schedule. I?ll say it again, the fact that the leafs don?t play Florida for the first time until the end of March is absolutely ridiculous.

There?s a much bigger talent gap in the East than there is in the West, so the overall league standings are a bit misleading.

The gap between the 8th place team and 9th place team in the East is pretty nuts. Right now 8th is on pace for 107 points. 9th place, Detroit of all teams, is on pace for just 83 points. Every other team in the East is below .500. I know generally speaking it's believed teams in playoff positions by this point of the season make it there, but I doubt we've seen a gap that large in a very, very long time.

In the West there's 6 teams that the 8 place team in the East would either be tied or beating in points percentage. Both the Wild Card teams in the East would be leading the Pacific division in points percentage. The current pace to make the playoffs in the West right now is 96 points, and there's still 4 teams on the outside that have a realistic chance of taking that spot.

So yeah barring the league just going a basic 1-16 league wide playoff format every team in the East is going to have a super tough road to the Finals.
