2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

God help us all if the reason Campbell is struggling so much is that he can't get help from Dusty Imoo.

As long as Dusty doesn't get a job with the Leafs, if he can fix Campbell, I say let them chat on the downlow - but, the extremely extremely downlow and only about goaltending.

Ya he needs some time with Dusty, that is for sure.

It's funny to think about how for like a 4-5 year stretch the Leafs' top left-winger is going to be a GTA born, childhood Leafs fan who kinda sorta fell into their laps because they became (or were about to become) UFAs earlier than they should have. Hopefully Dubas is already doing advanced scouting for whoever will fit this bill next.

Justin Bourne mentioned that Dubas was asking Lou to get Blake Coleman back when he was just a prospect plugging away in obscurity for the Albany Devils. Granted, no one is going to bring up all the other players Kyle might have targeted that are fizzle-outs. I think Dubas has a pretty good eye for this player archetype. Hyman was his first trade, another Toronto-born connection that could be acquired below market. Mason Marchment was another acquisition of his that was plucked from the scrap heap and developed into trade* bait.

* the trade looks bad in hindsight, but Marchment wasn't going to get proper ice time on this roster. Florida's more straightforward playstyle suits him.

Imagine if the Leafs had managed to bring back Carter Verhaeghe instead of signing Vesey last year. Ah well, can't win them all.

Every team in the league (including the Leafs) could have had him for free at the start of last season when he went on waivers. And this was after multiple pretty good AHL seasons too.

Funny, nobody on here ever suggested that he was a fit for Leafs ... and there are some pretty darned knowledgeable folks who hang out with us.

I mean I mostly just think it's funny that he flew under the radar like that but Adam Brooks gets claimed like half a dozen times.

Same thing with a guy like Alex Barre-Boulet in Tampa.  Good AHL numbers.  Went through waivers, got claimed once and went back.  Brooks can get claimed 500 times but a PPG AHL player can't get a chance on a garbage team like Arizona?

Fact that made me go "no way" today: Bunting (38 in 54 games) has more 5-on-5 points this season than McDavid (35 in 53 games).

Also, Kerfoot trails McDavid by just 4 5-on-5 points despite McDavid playing almost 200 more 5-on-5 minutes.

McDavid is an overrated bum with a climate-threatening heated driveway.
