2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

5pm today is the deadline for when qualifying offers can be handed out, so we'll be hearing some news about that by then. There are Toronto's RFAs currently:

Engvall
Kase
Sandin

Duszak
Krys
Rubins
Scott

Sandin will of course get one and Dubas has already announced Engvall will too. Kase is the question mark since he has arbitration rights and could potentially be rewarded a deal higher than the Leafs are comfortable with. Reminder that even if he isn't qualified it's entirely possible he still re-signs with the Leafs at some point.

Looking at the minor league guys, Rubins is basically a lock. Duszak seemed a little disgruntled with his lack of call-ups and reportedly asked to be moved. Krys was acquired from Chicago last season and didn't seem to make much of an impact with the Marlies. Entirely possible both those guys are cut loose. Ian Scott unfortunately simply can't stay healthy and if he returns to the Leafs organization at all this summer it should be on an AHL contract at most. Although with 3 goalies already signed to AHL deals I really just don't see any room for him here anymore.
Rubins, Duszak and Krys weren't extended.

I think the Leafs have done fairly well the last couple of days. They?ve not overpaid for any free agents. The goalie tandem is a gamble but the money spent on the pair works out about what I would have expected to spend but with no long term commitment.

Maybe a few PTOs to round out the bottom of the roster.

I wonder if there?s something coming down the line during the season for a 2nd line centre to eventually slide Tavares out to the wing.

I think there has to be.  I don't think there is any way the Leafs get Sandin and Engvall signed with the 2 million they have left of cap space.

Ok, so where are the leafs at now?  By my count we replacing Mikheyev and Kase with replacement-level players and the goaltending is kinda ?who knows.? Otherwise the same team.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall* - K?mpf - Aube-Kubel
Clifford - Gaudette - Simmonds
Malgin

Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Liljegren
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin*

Murray
Samsonov

* RFA

- Mikheyev, Lyubushkin, Campbell, Ka?e, Mrazek, Blackwell

I think Muzzin is otw outta dodge.

I have seen some speculation around that. Nothing concrete, though.

I don't see how they can keep him and Sandin if Dubas is committed to the Sandman at LD, which he alluded to today. They also want a heavy RD and could use the leftovers on another forward beside Engvall.

Once the crazy train from today slows down, he will fetch a decent return. Any dman that hits got paid today, I suspect there will be a decent market for Muzzin, even with his injury issues.

Strome would be nice, but he might end up with his brother in Anaheim.

So after seeing Burns go for not much and some salary retained who would you rather have Burns or Muzzin. There?s yourqb on the PP we?ve been lacking. Up there in age but still an effective player.

Team looks way better than last year. Dubas is a wizard!
No doubt all these players that passed through waivers last year WILL be difference makers in our playoff success!

I get the giddiness that is expressed by other teams at this time can be a bit much, and all the pundits are crapping on the Leafs right now, but here is what they have going out:

Spezza
Mikheyev
Kase
Lyubushkin
Cambell
Mrazek

The rest of the team has remained intact.  So this narrative that this is a drastically altered team and that there is no way they can be as good as they were last year is over looking the fact that the core 7 to 8 guys that drove this team to regualr season success that has not been seen in Maple Leaf land is still intact, and signed for at least another two years.  So really, tinkering around the edges is all the Leafs HAVE to do.

Mikheyev and Kase both missed significant periods of time in the lineup and Lyubushkin didn't join the team until nearly the 50 game mark. Mrazek was either abysmal or injured and Campbell spent a decent amount of time either ailing/underperforming or on the IL. And despite all of that, Leafs still played at a pretty high level. Personally I'm really not all that bent out of shape about losing anyone off of that list.
