2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Ugh.

I made a terrible error reading the comments on The Athletic's story about drafting Marner.

I mean it's good to have different takes and opinions. But how can so many people just be so.... wrong?

Rookie mistake, dude. Never read the comments unless you want to be enraged.

It's a documented fact that in the entire history of the internet there have only ever been 29,333 good comments.

That number feels high. Gotta be closer to 23,829. :P

Interseting...looks like Dubas has had enough of Sandin's agent or being asked about offer sheets

I saw someone post something to the effect of ?if you ever feel good about something but want to be told why you shouldn?t be feeling good about it, post it on Twitter.?

Did you finally admit to giving a terrible take on the internet.  A half dozen posters who are no longer here finally get their day in the sun!

I was listening to the Leaf Report podcast and they were discussing the problem with Kase and Engvall with arbitration rights making it potentially difficult to qualify them given the cap situation.

If they qualify these 2, and the players elect arbitration, and that arbitrator decides that they're worth too much money, the Leafs can't walk away given the walk-away threshold is ~$4.5m per year.

So this might explain why nothing has been done on those fronts.

Starting Goalie: Mrazek
Top-6 Winger acquisition: Robertson
1st round pick: trade down, get Rutger McGroarty and Owen Beck
UFA bargain bin: Giordano counts, and probably Blackwell again
Marlie that makes the roster: Robertson and Holmberg

I don't get too hung up on the opening day roster. I'm happy to let the kids jockey for roles with some steady support and stay as flexible as possible cap-wise for injury management and deadline season. Stress-test the core players to carry some more weight than last season, and try out as many combos as possible throughout the regular season. You can't keep running out of ideas in the playoffs.

Another mistake that he's dreaming may actually turn out. If Leafs start the season with him as the starter we're hooped. If Dubas can get rid of him somehow it'll make my day.

I basically see the potential options I'd have interest in sorted into these 2 groups...

1A: Campbell, Varlamov, Fleury, Gibson, Kuemper

1B: Mrazek, Reimer/Hill, Stolarz, Comrie, Blackwood, Georgiev, Murray (if bought out), Brossoit

Any one of the 1A's paired with one of the 1B's would be fine by me. All comes down to what makes the most sense cap/acquisition cost/value wise.

Updated list. Mrazek being moved out makes acquiring one of the 1A's a little easier. Although with Fleury off the table, Varlamov reportedly not being available, and Gibson probably not being as cheaply available as I would like that really only leaves Campbell and Kuemper.

I could add Husso to this list as well of course but I feel like he's a 1B that'll be paid more like a 1A so he'd more of a Plan C if Campbell and Kuemper sign elsewhere.

Unless there's a trade really feels like Leafs cleared money to pay Campbell now.  The devil you know and all that. I'd like to see if they can get an upgrade, but at what cost?  Campbell is just money.

Husso obviously had a good season (.919 SV% in 40 games) but the previous year had an .893 SV% in 17 games and a .890 SV% in 7 playoff games this year.  I'd be fine if Husso was a tandem but I'm really not comfortable with Husso + Woll/Kallgren
