2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

This Mikheyev @ $5m talk is bananas, right?

It?s on the high side, but free agent speculation often is. That being said, I also wouldn?t be shocked if someone pays him that much.

I know people are already freaking out about replacing his offense, but he didn't bring a whole lot in the last three playoffs. I've stopped caring what depth counting stats are in the regular season, it really only matters in the playoffs.

Ramping up the activity this week, so let's play an offseason game.
Who do you think the Leafs will get? It's okay to say N/A or whatever you want, because I probably won't check back on this once the season starts anyway.

Starting Goalie:
Top-6 Winger acquisition:
1st round pick:
UFA bargain bin:
Marlie that makes the roster:

This seems fun.  My guesses/desires:

Starting Goalie: Ville Husso
Top-6 Winger acquisition: J.T. Miller
1st round pick: traded for Miller
UFA bargain bin: Dylan Strome & Miles Wood (both after being unqualified)
Marlie that makes the roster: Nick Robertson

I also don?t think he?s going to be as productive going forward, either. His shooting percentage this season was almost double what it had been in his previous two seasons, and that?s not likely to be sustainable. He doesn?t provide much in terms of play making, either. He?s basically a Russian Kapanen - great speed, okay shot, good defensive awareness, but not great at using his teammates or generating offence that isn?t off the rush.

I'll dream.  Why not it's a Monday!!!

Starting Goalie: Kuemper
Top-6 Winger acquisition: Strome
1st round pick: McGroaty or Del Bel Belluz
UFA bargain bin: Perry and Gagner
Marlie that makes the roster: Dahlstrom

R/S    CAP              CAP HIT          OVER              CAP SPACE
22  $82,500,000  $82,480,616  $212,500      $19,384

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Domi(2@2)-Strome(2.5@2)-Nylander
Marchment(2@2)-Tavares-Gagner(.85@2)
Kase(1.5@2)-Kempf-Engvall(1.5@2)
Clifford

Reilly-Brodie
Giordano-Chychrun(4.6@3)
Sandin(1.65@2)-Liljegren
Dahlstrom

Kuemper(5@3)
Giorgiev(1.3@2)

Sounds like there may be some discontent brewing with Sandin.  I will not be a happy fan if they manage to alienate him into asking for a trade.  He and Liljegren ought to be starting next season and if that means moving someone else, then that's what they need to do.

How many assistant GMs can one team have?  By my count:

Pridham
Gilman
Wickenheiser
Metcalf
Hardy

As long as they all have different areas of focus, why not have a bunch? One to focus on the cap, one on the Marlies, one on scouting/player development outside of the pro ranks, etc. Could really help advance areas that are underutilized or neglected.

Exactly. They're just turning the Senior Director title into Assistant GM level (which might make them harder to poach).

Gilman has been bumped to be the Brendan Shanahan of the Marlies.

That's the other thing - for most (all?) of them, it's mostly a title bump more than anything else.

HR-wise, and judging by the timing of the announcement, these people just went through their performance reviews, were deemed worthy of raises, and got the title bump to match/justify the increase. There is room underneath to elevate other voices in the department, but their actual roles are basically the same.

That's a good point actually.  Never thought about the title and ability for another team to poach.

Getting Sanford may help in many ways.  He has tons of insight with Vancouver's goalie ranks.  They are already paying big for a 5 year term goalie.  So im curious to see if he talks Dubas into getting RFA DiPietro for Holl maybe.  DiPietro has been good wherever he plays.  Then give Holl's money to Sandin

Literally his only job will be to identify wingers for Tavares

Other front office ins and outs outlined here:

Ugh.

I made a terrible error reading the comments on The Athletic's story about drafting Marner.

I mean it's good to have different takes and opinions. But how can so many people just be so.... wrong?
