cap-ologists seem to think Sandin and Engvall don?t both fit in the remaining space.

Predictions on the next shoe to drop?  Kerfoot?  Muzzin?  It seems unlikely to be Sandin (or Engvall) to me.  I also thing Holl is too valuable at his cap hit and handedness. I wouldn?t be at all surprised if he was paid 4 million/year if he was a UFA.

If Holl has potential teams willing to give him 4 million a year, he should be easy to move for a half decent asset. Of the above mentioned, despite his handedness, I think he leaves the smallest hole to fill if he's moved.

I'll eat my hat if Justin f'en Holl gets $4m.

Someone should live stream that.

Better than a cat turd I guess.

$4mil's pushing it, but I'd take him over the two defencemen who did sign for $4mil this offseason (Leddy & Gudbranson).

This is the kind of thing I mean ? he?s as good as a few other defensemen who sign in the 3-4 million range as UFAs. Hence replacing him for substantially less than his current salary seems really tough.  Basically, competent defensemen are hard to come by cheaply.

I think there's competent defensemen in the Leafs organization that brings what Holl does (other than the right shot part).

Tkachuk - Matthews - Marner would be a huge glow-up of the London Knights' super line (Dvorak was the centre). 35M on one line is pretty funny.

Anyone have any interest in Matthew Tkachuk?

No?

OK then.

Would almost certainly cost you Nylander. So it's basically Nylander for 2 years $6.9mil + a reasonable likelihood of signing an extension afterward vs. Tkachuk for (probably) 1 year $9mil or higher + probably no extension because he'll want to play in the U.S. (although re-signing and playing in the Battle of Ontario vs. his bro long-term could be appealing).

Feels very unlikely something like this would happen but from a fan perspective I'd certainly consider it. I don't think you could play the big-3 all on one line though if it happened.

Just doesn't feel like the Leafs are a fit at all.

Is it just me, but talent aside, Tkachuk to me seems like he?s king of the douchebags. Over privileged rich kid of a former nhler.

Do I sound bitter? I guess but I just don?t like him.

I need to get off Twitter. Narrative is Marner for Tkachuk isn?t enough for Calgary.

I do it to myself. I only have myself to blame here?

There's a lot of craziness about what we would need to give Calgary for Tkachuk. I think they want their Gilmour revenge. Pass.

Marner's a Leaf, so, clearly, he sucks and is massively overrated. Definitely not the top RW in the league for the past two seasons. Nope. Not at all. No one voted for that.

I?m genuinely asking because I don?t know and I barely watch other teams play but the theme of the comments are always around ?grittier, tougher, corners? blah blah blah. So my question is, who are those players in Colorado and Tampa? I don?t remember anyone from TB being this extra ?gritty? player. Stamkos wasn?t exactly in the corners mucking it up.

I?m just saying that I feel there?s a huge group of hockey ?fans? that are stuck in 2001. That hockey doesn?t exist anymore. Unless I?m completely oblivious and out to lunch.

It's the fall back argument for when facts and figures aren't on their side - and only using their own narrow versions of toughness or grit or whatever. In their minds, guys that are more finesse types are soft, don't go into dirty areas, etc. - regardless of whether or not that's true (for instance, look at the criticism of Nylander - he scores a huge percentage of his goals from right in front of the net, but he "doesn't go into dirty areas").

It's meaningless and typical of sports fans across all sports. It's armchair "analysis."

Hammarstr?m Nylander could go into the corner with a dozen eggs in his pocket and not break any of them.

Only because he's so silky smooth. He'd also come out with the puck and create a good scoring chance.

I hate the Nylander argument because it's just not the right argument.

Nylander is a gifted hockey player who is able to affect the outcome of a game all by himself.  He has been the Leafs most consistent performer in the playoffs over their last three playoffs.  So this idea that he is soft and doesn't show up in big games is completely made up in my mind.

Now does Nylander take some nights off in December, January, and February, and is it more noticeable when Nylander takes a night off?  I would say that they answer to those questions is yes.  But I am willing to live with that because until the Leafs start missing the playoffs, Nylander isn't the problem.
