So, if he gets penalized...and has to sit a few games, but is sent down...How does that work?

He'll have to serve his suspension, regardless. The AHL honours NHL suspensions, so, he won't be able to play there without serving his suspension with the big club.
Hmm, OK. Thanks.
Well, at least he'll able to let his nose heal.

Except that's not really what's happening if you watch the games is it?  They're getting few opportunities not because they're holding onto the puck longer, but because the other team has the puck most of the game in the Leafs end.

Can't really argue with you.  Hockey's example of 'catanaccio'.

I don't know much about that but a quick Wikipedia read makes it seem not at all similar to the Leafs: "which implies a highly organized and effective backline defense focused on nullifying opponents' attacks and preventing goal-scoring opportunities."

How about rope-a-dope?  Wear teams down by giving them endless puck possession and shots, and when they're tired of all of that, go and score on them.

By that logic shouldn't our goalies wear down too then?

Well, sure, if they were human and not supermen.

I always forget that little detail!

except that leaf goalies this year are only playing half of their games...platoon!

its harder to be worn down when you're only playing 40 games this year.

Good thing the Leafs have almost a week off. Can get Kooly and Fraser to heal up (not that we really need Fraser imo).

I can't wait to see what Carlyle does with the defence when Fraser returns. Of our current 6 defencemen Rielly is averaging the least amount of ice-time with 18:07. But all of them, including Rielly, have hit the 20 minute mark at least once this season. All 6 defencemen are essentially getting top-4 minutes. Does Carlyle take out a defencemen he trusts with top-4 minutes in favour of a defencemen he won't play against the oppositions top-6 forwards? And for what? To add a physical defencemen to a group that already has 3 of the top-10 hitters and 2 of the top-15 shot blockers among defencemen in the league?

2-3 games ago, Ranger was a lock to move to the press box but he has been waaaay better the past few games. He made some huge plays vs. Calgary in the d-zone and seems to have shaken the case of the yips he had going for a while.

mirtle: Leafs rookie Carter Ashton has a hearing tomorrow with the NHL for his hit from behind last night.

I could see him getting a game or two.

I wish he would get the maximum.  He has quickly become my least favorite Leaf. He is a gutless puke who plays dirty to hurt people, including his own team mate McLaren, and is a pathetic fighter.  He has no offensive skill at the NHL level.  I am unhappy he gets to where the Leaf jersey.

I think that he is playing on the edge as much as he can as the only shot he has to make it at the NHL level is to play that physical pesky game...he needs to reel it in and this (I'd say 2 game) suspension will likely help that.

He is a real bad fighter. It seems like he is paralyzed and just waiting to get clocked.

I can understand the least favourite part, everyone has those players but I wouldn't necessarily call that a dirty hit...stupid and unnecessary absolutely. I never really thought he was that great a player either and would personally rather have Aulie...

I agree B'dog.

I just don't want people to be unsure of my what my opinion is of Ashton.  I don't like him.  There are so many better options for Carlyle.

I really liked Aulie as a big strong defensive dman. I don't know if he would have cracked this current defense corp but I wish he would have at least been traded for anything else other than Ashton.

I don't get Orr being on the team at this point but he is elite in his role like Kessel is in his.  I just see McLaren skate really well, read the play half decent and bring an imposing 6'5" 230 lbs frame who can fight other top heavyweights in the league...not as well as Orr but adequately.

A 4th line of McLaren / McClement / Leivo (or even Bodie if Carlyle wanted another forward who fought) would play half decent defensively and would score the odd goal.  That would be a major upgrade on hockey talent over Orr...who I really like as one of the best fighters in the league who is also one of the hardest punchers bar none now that the Bogeyman is gone (RIP).

Is Aulie not a scratch most nights in Tampa? I think they both qualify as borderline NHLers who will most likely spend most of their careers in the AHL or leave for Europe at some point.

Aulie brought down Phaneuf when he was here. He gets a pass because he's a big guy, but he's a terrible defender at this point.

I missed the game where Ashton had this hit but I saw a replay and it looked incredibly dangerous.  Ignoring that stuff, I have liked what I've seen from Ashton.  He has managed to dig out and hold on to pucks in the offensive zone well.  I don't know much about his dzone play though.  I think a fourth line of Ashton, Colborne and McClement would be pretty decent as fourth lines go.

Who are you and what did you do with the Bulldog?
