Leafs acquire Scott Laughton

Well it's Grebenkin and a 1st over them. I wonder what the plan for Minten going forward is though. His likely line-up spot (3C) is now blocked this season and next. Possibly beyond that too if Laughton re-signs here after next season which feels somewhat likely considering he's from here.
Lots of C's move to the wing so not worried about that. And TSN sau=id the pick was in 27

Was going to express disappointment about the 1st being traded. But two years out in 2027, and top 10 protected? That's palatable. Lots of time to recoup a pick between now and then.

Keeping. The 2026 pick (at least for now) and having it too 10 protected (in case the core implodes) seems pretty reasonable

I actually think this is a decent deal, especially in a sellers market. The 50% retention is huge, this is a legitimate 3rd liner who only carries a $1.5 mil cap hit next season. I get that there's potential with Grebenkin but I think it's fair to say he's less certain to become a productive NHLer than either of Minten/Cowan and also has less trade value. Also the fact that the pick is a 2027 first rounder gives a little more time to recoup that pick (if it makes sense). Getting a 4th and a 6th back doesn't really move the needle that much, but can't hurt.

I don't really care for this move one way or the other. I am disappointed in Berube for not being able to construct 3 functional lines with what he had.

I thought a D is what we really needed so hopefully we can still manage a depth D man.

I was expecting Minten for Laughton straight up. We ended up keeping our top-4 trade assets (Cowan, Minten, Danford, 2026 1st) and managed to get Laughton for 50% retention. That's probably worth adding Grebenkin.

Makes me wonder about Minten for a RH dman ... If they re-sign Tavares, they'd have to get rid of Kampf for him to play as center on the 4th line. Maybe it is another season in the AHL for him ... They need some of these cheap young guys to fill out the roster under the cap

The issue is we don't have a legit 3C until now. Laughton will get a big boost coming here. Still time to get a RD. Leafs still have their 26 1st and some prospects.

Welcome TPL!

Laughton slides up the lineup a bit more readily than Holmberg/Robertson/Domi too

With the Laughton move, Reaves sent to the Marlies, and Pacioretty joining Hakanpaa on LTIR there's about $1.4mil in cap space with a 23-man roster. If say Dewar went the other way the Leafs could afford a $2.5mil defenceman.
