Leafs acquire Scott Laughton

I actually think this is a decent deal, especially in a sellers market. The 50% retention is huge, this is a legitimate 3rd liner who only carries a $1.5 mil cap hit next season. I get that there's potential with Grebenkin but I think it's fair to say he's less certain to become a productive NHLer than either of Minten/Cowan and also has less trade value. Also the fact that the pick is a 2027 first rounder gives a little more time to recoup that pick (if it makes sense). Getting a 4th and a 6th back doesn't really move the needle that much, but can't hurt.

Losing Grebenkin is disappointing but this seems like as good a deal as Tre can make. They need to bolster the bottom 6 now, not hope that Grebenkin can 2 years from now or whatever.

I can see Domi or Kampf going out to make salary work if there's a bigger move out there. Otherwise, those feel like offseason moves.
The team NEEDED Kampf at 4C while our 3C slot was so weak. Having Laughton makes him way more expendable especially with like 4 other players who could perform typical 4C duties.

Sure. I'm just not convinced there's a deal out there for him right now. But, who knows? With the way the market it, I suppose a 3 team deal with him involved is not out of the question.

Sucks seeing yet another 1st being traded in a deal for a bottom six player. I know it's the price to pay if you are looking to make a go of it. I hope the team is up to task, and Treliving does what is required to make it happen.

I don't think this moves the needle at all. Domi/Kampf/Jankrok vs Laughton doesn't really move the needle much for me.
Laughton is an offensive upgrade on Kampf and a defensive upgrade on Domi. If they stick around, it helps slot them into roles they're better suited for. Jarnkrok doesn't really factor in here, other than it means he's unlikely to see time at C - which helps the team's LW depth.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
McMann-Tavares-Nylander
Robertson/Domi-Laughton-Jarnkrok

Or if we're easing off Matthews as a defensive centre in his current state
Knies-Matthews-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Marner
Robertson/Domi-Laughton-Jarnkrok
