Liles Contract Extension (4 years, 3.875 AAV)

I was watching a Habs game the other day and even the announcers were making comments about Kaberle not shooting when there's a shot available, it's not just the fans.  Maybe it's a perception thing but it's a fairly commonly held belief about Kaberle.

Hold on. Announcers being full of it? Well, that changes the whole ballgame.

As for Liles' resigning, I have mixed feelings about it.  He's been only okay so far (not exceptional), and Burke doesn't exactly have the best record on signing defenseman.

You have to think that this signing means that one of Komi, Schenn, or Aubin are on their way out pretty soon.

Not to pump his tires but I think Liles has been a fair bit better than "okay." He's come in exactly as advertised I think and if I were to grade him based on performance and level of expectation, I'd need sound reasoning to give him anything less than a B+.

I would agree as well that he has exceeded expectations to some extent. Contract is pretty reasonable too.

The thing I picked up when watching Kaberle is that, when he's looking to shoot and doesn't release, it usually meant he didn't feel the shot would get through to the net. He was very conscious of having his shot blocked high and having it turn into an odd man rush the other way.

I think if we objectively looked at how farcical the Leafs PP has been
since Liles was out, we'd collectively be happy..or happier....

"Farcical" may be a bit strong but you get my drift.

I'm not checking the PP % (TV last night said 15% or so) and I'm not saying we have not scored at all on the PP but boy has it looked confused with no 2nd point man after Phaneuf.

The other thing that always occurred to me, and I'm guessing Kaberle, is that for most of his career he was playing with people who were much, much better at shooting the puck than he was. Because of that I think he knew that, more often than not, passing was the better percentage play for him than shooting.

Admittedly, I realize that concept relies on supposing that Tomas Kaberle, one of the more successful offensive defensemen in the NHL, has a better grasp on how to play the game than the fans at home but it always struck me as being pretty reasonable.

Condescend much?

Re-sign and trade?  ;)

Oh and I'm almost at the point of sending someone a 2nd or 3rd to take Komisarek and give us future considerations. (aka a bag of pucks)

Not sure why this is such a all-fired upgrade over re-signing Kaberle -- looks like a $400K/yr difference.  But we need Liles' skills, so I hope he doesn't crap out before it's over.

I think it was more a case of if you can parlay assets to get younger and a high pick, do it, as Kabs was replaced for only a 2nd. I'd much rather have Joe Colborne and Tyler Biggs and Liles than just Kaberle.

Problem is, Burke really likes Komi.  He's a physical presence in front of the net, lays big hits and looks after his teammates which I'm sure all play in his favor with BB.  Now, if he would just stop coughing up the puck and making stupid passes I would be alright with keeping him.

When was the last time he stood up for a teammate? Oh and he is rarely at the front of the net these days as he has usually been dragged out of position and leaves his man open.

On the odd occasion he wins a puck battle he about turns and usually causes a turnover with a bad pass or a poor clearing attempt up the boards.

The fact they have saddled our steadiest Dman Carl G with covering for him is a shame.

I agree with the giveaways, and that's the most frustrating part of his game.  Perhaps I'm imagining things but it seems as though he has been pretty physical and doing a pretty good job of clearing the front of the net since he came back from his latest injury.  Of course, that's relative to his teammates who typically don't do a good job of that.
