Liles Contract Extension (4 years, 3.875 AAV)

Always nice to hear...

Liles on why he didn't elect for UFA: extremely happy to be in Toronto, something special in that room

Very good to hear that Liles is happy here, the PP has looked a bit lost without him and he is very good at holding the line back there.  Gardiner could grow into his role with more experience, 4 years on this contract is probably about right.

I've talked doom and gloom about UFAs bailing on us but hearing this kind of thing (backed up with action so not just the typical platitudes) gives me some optimism that more guys, like Grabbo, Gus and later Lupul and Kessel, will be happy enough to stay here and take a bit of a discount compared to the open market.

Re-sign and trade?  ;)

Oh and I'm almost at the point of sending someone a 2nd or 3rd to take Komisarek and give us future considerations. (aka a bag of pucks)

Problem is, Burke really likes Komi.  He's a physical presence in front of the net, lays big hits and looks after his teammates which I'm sure all play in his favor with BB.  Now, if he would just stop coughing up the puck and making stupid passes I would be alright with keeping him.

Maybe it's Burke's way of over-valuing Komi so he can get more in return for him.  I always viewed Komi as one of the ones who took stupid penalties.

With Wilson as coach, I thought every player would leave at the first chance they could get.

The only thing Komi has been doing well is after the whistle, if any player stands within a meter of our goalie, he really lets him have it. That is hardly worth his enormous price tag.

Curtis Joseph is the only time I remember losing a player to UFA that the team wanted to retain.

That's true. A lot can be made about the spotlight being difficult in Toronto, but not very many players leave willingly.

Maybe Nieuwendyk/Roberts too, but with the way the negotiation was handled, I'm not sure JFJ wanted to keep the both of them.

JFJ wouldn't give Nieuwendyk 2 years and they both walked.  JFJ was right on that one as JN didn't make it through one season before his back gave out and he retired.  Meanwhile, Roberts slagged the team to no end because of it.

I really like this deal both because of the quality of the player and also because of the price. Liles was being considered for the captaincy of Colorado.

Kaberle and a 2nd for Liles, Colborne and Biggs??  Nice!

Kabs has 1434 shots in 13 seasons, and less than 100 in his first 4 seasons.
Liles has 1033 shots in 8 seasons.  Every season Liles was healthy he had over 100 SOG.

Post lockout

Kaberle - 893 shots in 507 games (1.76 shots/game)
Liles - 918 shots in 478 games (1.92 shots/game)

Not exactly a huge difference there, now is there? About 13 shots a season. Now, can we please let the whole "Kaberle doesn't shoot" thing die? It was only true of him early in his career.

Although anecdotal, I think there could be a case made for shot selection.  Liles seems to blast it in on net for scoring chances.  Kaberle liked to swoop behind the net and end with with an off angle shot or no shot at all.  Also, Kaberle always often dumped the puck in right on net from the red line while going for a line change.

That's less to do with shot selection and more about the purpose behind the shots. Kaberle, while a competent goal scorer, knew that his shot was not his forte (though, I think it was under appreciated) and would quite often not be shooting to get the puck in net, but, rather to create a rebound or have his shot deflected and so on. Liles, on the other hand, is shooting with the purpose of putting the puck in the net himself on a more regular basis. Kaberle would tend to use his shot to create offence, while Liles seems to use it more to score goals.

All this back and forth aside, anytime when we're discussing player "A" in reasonable comparison with player "B" and  player "B" is Thomas Kaberle, you just know player "A" is a heck of a player.

Semantics I guess, but I'm pretty sure we took Percy with the 1st we received for Kaberle.
