Agree Burke let them bleed out a bit too long for a realistic shot at playoffs.

I think after the Washington game was about the latest he could pull the trigger.  It's also the point where they were clearly back in the dumps after the Edm win and IIRC when defenders of Wilson became pretty much non-existent other than Burke.

If they get 2+ points out of the Florida and Chicago games we're in a bit better spot right now.  The Chicago game in particular looked winnable, all they had to do was not implode.  And of course the Florida game is completely different if our players have their heads on a bit tighter going into it.

of course..had they won the chicago game ..wilson would still be here

I'm not so sure about that I think things were set in motion after the Florida game.  Didn't Carlyle win his last game as Anaheim coach?  You're beyond being saved by a single win once the GM is on the phone making offers I think.  Besides I was talking canning Wilson prior to those games.

Canes beat the Caps in OT.

Leafs actually made out alright in the standings tonight, it could have been worse. This is far from over with 16 games left.

I've been watching the Leafs since 1974 and the best thing we'll get out of this season is a high draft pick.

Now, get off of my lawn!

The next 6 games are losable too.  All against teams in the playoff hunt:

Philadelphia, Capitals, Panthers, Lightning, Senators, Bruins

I'm fully on board Tank Nation at this point and I can see these games going: Loss (by a wide margin), Loss, Win, Win, Loss, Loss (by another wide margin).

2 points out of the 4th overall pick. No problem.

That would probably be their best possible outcome for this season - a really high pick.

Had they taken a first for Clarke "Spinback or Drop-pass" MacArthur, a really high pick + that pick could equal a Top Two Pick.

That's what I wanted them to do at the deadline. A lot of guys they've got are dime a dozen. They need some special players and year after years, the other GMs in the league are not giving them away.

If Burke was really offered a first for MacArthur and his $3.25 million contract and turned it down... I'd be pissed.

I assume it was Nashville offering the 1st round pick. Anyone have anything credible on this? I've heard Burke say he was offered 1st round picks but mention any names.

I am usually the most optimistic of fans, I admit after their win in Montreal a small part of me thought they might be able to make enough of a push to get into the 8th spot in the Conference.  But it is to the point now where I'm hoping they just keep continuing to lose and plummet down the standings to draft a young offensive stud.

And we all know how well they play once the playoffs are out of the equation. Count on another insufficient win streak to finish off the year.

From Burkes own mouth on deadline day after it was over he alluded to being offerred 1st round picks for everyone on the 2nd line. So.... yeah.

I would hang on to Grabovski but to imagine we could have two first rounders for Kulemin and MacArthur right now... yikes.

What's 2 first rounders for Kulemin and MacArthur worth to the Leafs?  They would obviously be from teams in the playoff hunt, so the best the picks would fall into the teens or 20s.  People are saying the draft isn't very deep, and given how our recent draft picks have developed, I can't see a low pick doing anything on the Leafs for 5 years minimum.

While I agree that we should be trading some of the mediocre players away for picks and prospects and build this team up the right way, does anyone really think Burke will switch tracks at this juncture? I mean, every indication he has given and everything he has said points to filling out the roster with players who can play on the team today. (or very soon)

He doesn't want to take the long road here, and draft picks don't help this team out in the short term. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if he trades away this years 1st for some immediate help. Unless he completely changes course here in the summer, I dont see him trying to acquire more draft picks moving forward, unless they're to help recover the ones he trades away.

At the draft would the 4th pick overall, packaged with Lupul (contract expires next year) and a solid prospect be enough to land Getzlaf (contract also expires next year)?

The Ducks cannot keep all three of Ryan, Perry and Getzlaf. The Leafs have a history of making deals with the ducks.

Regardless of how they do it, I think that if the Leafs can get a top 4 pick they have to package it up and move it for someone that can help this team now. Getzlaf just happens to be a guy that I have always wanted.

Why don't we just keep our pick?
