Potential Expansion Draft Rules

Why wouldn't you, if you were McPhee? He specifically said no deals were final. I'm pretty sure he's running this like a protection racket.

It's Anaheim's own dumb fault if they lose both their defensemen but won't pony up to protect them.

Well, what your describing isn't a deal at all then.  You either have an agreement or you don't.

McPhee isn't some 40's gangster. He's been in the NHL management community for 25 years. If he shakes Bob Murray's hand (another 25+ year hockey man) and says a deal is agreed upon then it's agreed upon. That's that. If McPhee wanted to shop that offer around then he could have done so earlier.

And like Frank said, these transactions might actually be agreed upon in writing too with the NHL and just not announced yet. Either way, those agreements with teams like Anaheim, Chicago, and the Islanders are all 100%. Apparently nothing was agreed upon with Minnesota before the lists were submitted so that could be a situation where McPhee leverages multiple offers against each other.

I am wondering if a prospect like Bracco might be up for trade bait. Bracco and a 2nd rounder might bring a reasonable decent d-man our way?

Anyone else starting to think this has taken what should be a relatively simple process and turned it into a really strange and complicated one? I feel like there would have been ways to handle the expansion process, regardless of how strong/weak a position you want a new franchise to start in, that would have been a lot more straightforward.

Also, I'm starting to think that with all of the emphasis on accumulating things like late picks/ok prospects and holding off on drafting the better players made available to them while not giving them a great draft position you're really flirting with the possibility of building a team that has a clear path to a sort of low-key competitiveness but I don't see them with an easy path to the top.

Bobbo dropped a bunch of details on the apparent deals Vegas has in the middle of the night:

-Says that in return for passing on Vatanen and Manson, Vegas will select Clayton Stoner and Anaheim will trade them Shea Theodore

-Vegas selects Trevor van Riemsdyk and gets Marcus Krueger from Chicago

-Columbus' deal involves them trading Vegas the 24th overall pick + a prospect in return for Vegas not selecting Jack Johnson. Vegas might also be taking on David Clarkson's contract

-SOMETHING is happening with Florida and Marchessault/Smith, but that's the tough one to pin down. Vegas might get a pick to not select one, or Florida might actually make a deal where Vegas gets BOTH of them in return for other assets from Vegas

-In Minnesota, it appears as though Brodin/Scandella/Staal are safe. Vegas looks to be getting Eric Haula + a prospect instead

-The Islanders are sending the concussed Mikhail Grabovski and a 1st round draft pick to Vegas. There was also talk that this involved Vegas having to select Nikolai Kulemin instead of the other much better unprotected players the Islanders have. That hasn't been confirmed but it does seem as though New York earned some extra protection slots with the 1st rounder

-Pittsburgh is sending something to Vegas to ensure they select Fleury, likely just a draft pick or two

-Tampa might have a deal to steer Vegas away from their younger unprotected defenceman like Koekkoek and Dotchin and instead having them take Jason Garrison and his $4.6mil cap hit instead

With that said, Mirtle also said this:

James Mirtle‏ @mirtle
Vegas could have side deals with nearly half the other 30 NHL teams I'm told. That's crazy.

So there's still likely a bunch of other smaller deals around too.

Thanks for the rundown, Carlton.

These are remarkably underwhelming because those side deals seemed rather... easy.

More from Bob:
Those are only expected/rumored/reported pre-freeze deals. VGK bound to have secondary trades on tap, claiming a player, then flipping him.

All these VGK deals have created quite a logjam. NHL GMs alternately awestruck/aggravated at how VGK GM George McPhee orchestrated it all.
Many talking about "The Pledge." That is, if VGK did deal with team, VGK insisted that team not do any other deals that could harm VGK. All this, of course, The Pledge that is, was in the context of pre-freeze. So from the moment a team did a deal with VGK, that team couldn't make pre-freeze trade with a third party if it affected VGK in any way.

Many rival GMs concede McPhee did excellent job of maximizing his leverage in unique situation, likes of which has never been seen in NHL. Net effect, tho, is many GMs are champing at bit to start making deals again when "freeze" is lifted at 8 a.m. ET Thursday. Handcuffs off.

The Pledge sounds like a Trump cabinet meeting.

Flip deals on Thursday will hopefully be more interesting.

So some of the official selections on defence so far have been... Luca Sbisa, Deryk Engelland, Griffin Reinhart, Alexei Emelin and (eventually) Clayton Stoner.

If I had to make a list of 5 of the most unappealing defenceman in the league...

Reinhart is a guy I might take a chance on, but only on the cheap. He's still young, and has/had a high ceiling. He's obviously not likely to develop into a top pairing type, but, I look at someone like Hickey - who took a long time to develop into an NHL defenceman, and has become a very solid one - or Chara - who, while he didn't come with the hype or pressure of a top 5 pick, struggled to really contribute in his first few years in the league - and I'm not willing to completely write him off yet.

But they took 14 (!) and have some appealing ones too, no?

I realize I'm late to the party here but was there any particular reason the Leafs left Leipsic unprotected? It seems odd to me that they would let a pretty decent prospect leave for nothing, especially when they simply could have left Martin off their list. And quite frankly, I couldn't see Vegas having picked Martin anyway. Is there something I'm missing here?

Leaving Martin exposed would have only protected one more of Rychel, Leipsic, or Marincin; one of those guys was always slated to go. The Marlies, at the end of their season, seemed a bit down on Leipsic's growth, so I'm not even sure they would've used that protection slot on Leipsic.

Leipsic is better than Rychel (production wise) as he produced without Rychel's cushy linemates and zone starts. At the NHL level, Rychel was probably the more flexible player in our system given the players we already have.

No, you're on the money.  This is another in the long line of pretty questionable calls by the LL headed front office that is getting defended primarily with "Well, it's not the dumbest thing in the world so partial credit" like we're grading remedial English.

But, like I said elsewhere, it was never particularly realistic to pretend like they didn't value Martin highly after the contract they gave him and the way they played him.

We'll see what the trades queued for this morning yield, but so far it looks like a bunch of missed opportunities for Vegas due to weak side deals, other than Schmidt, Marchessault, Fleury, and a handful of 1st round picks. And I guess Theodore, Miller, and Leipsic.

From this fluff piece
McPhee wussed out because of friendship.

TvR rumoured to be heading to Carolina (where they need more defensemen?). JvR to follow for Faulk pls? :)

The Maple Leafs are one of the teams interested in Colin Miller (Golden Knights) a trade involving him is a strong possibly. #tvasports

Trade freeze lifts in 4 minutes!

I dunno, he's 23 years old and couldn't crack the OILERS' defence the past 2 seasons. Even his post-draft junior numbers are pretty disappointing. Think it's definitely time to bring out the bust stamp.

What no 8 hour post-freeze lift trade show on TSN?  Disappointed.
