This is interesting....

No head coach in NHL history has won more games in their first four seasons behind the bench than the 195 collected by Todd McLellan.

I'm guessing not many coaches get hired to take over a team that went 49-23-10 the yeaar before.

Hey, Didn't someone say coaching changes didn't happen to winning teams?

Its rare; like winning the lottery or getting a fair shake from the establishment.

Looks like Todd McLellan might not be an option:

Unless Sharks ownership makes the call and fires Wilson too. In which case they can both come here.

Wouldn't shock me if he goes too.

I would be happy to have him around here too, but he has certainly had a lot of kicks at the can and supported both a coaching staff and core roster of players that can't get anywhere in the post season.

That 4-game collapse was ridiculous.  Ppl keep referring to the Leafs game 7 collapse as the "worst in history" but I'd rather go down in 10 mins than have 4 whole games to close out and not be able to do it.

I think both the Leafs and Sharks lack the killer instinct to progress in the playoffs, or for the Leafs to even make the playoffs.  The Sharks reminded me of the Senators of the early 2000s in that they would dominate during the regular season then disappear during the playoffs.

If McClellan did come to the Leafs he would inherit a team that still lacks that killer instinct and playoff experience so I am not sure if he would want to come here.

Disappear in the playoffs?  One of those teams made it within 2 wins of the finals.  Only once did they finish 1st in their division, so not sure they would 'dominate' the regular season.  IIRC they often had brutal injuries in the playoffs too (Sundin comes to mind).  They were a very good team, a contender even, but hardly a sure thing and they hardly disappeared in the playoffs.

I recall them disappearing against the Leafs.

seems like you are confusing the sens in the early 2000's and the leafs in the early 2000's.  The leafs of that era played better in the playoffs then they did in the regular season whereas the sens played better in the regular season then the playoffs.

Interesting speculation from Greg Brady:

Greg Brady @bradyfan590
Now convinced beyond doubt if the Leafs somehow, some way bring Carlyle back, it means they're angling to hire Babcock in 12 months.
7:16 AM - 2 May 2014

From Helene St. James/Detroit Free Press:

Babcock, who turned 51 on Tuesday, said it was ?no priority whatsoever? to get a new deal, adding ?I doubt it? when asked if he?d talk extension. Babcock?s explanation was that he?s comfortable with the situation as is ? meaning he?s got a year left, and that year overlaps with his youngest daughter entering her senior year of high school. Babcock said if he doesn?t spend the year as coach of the Wings, he?d sign on as an assistant with Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson.

So, Carlyle serves his final year giving us the 1st overall pick next year.  Then Babcock swoops in the next year and, with the help of Connor McDavid, takes us to the cup final.  Leiweke plans the parade route and we crash the TMLFans server... again.

Sounds like he is happy where he is.  Why would he leave?  Why would the wings want someone else?

I agree with you, why would he leave the Wings?  Why would he leave the Ducks when his contract expired and the team was doing well?  I thought it was interesting that he even made mention that he would coach/assist with Michigan if he didn't spend the year with the wings.  Why would he not spending the year with the Wings even be an option?

Who knows... my guess is he stays with Detroit, but maybe he's ready to move on to something else.

I'm thinking that at some point next year the Leafs hire a couple of guys to take Babcock out drinking.  He'll get really drunk and then drive impaired.  He'll get arrested and sentenced to community service coaching one of the district pee-wee hockey teams.  The Leafs probably qualify as one of those at this point.  I mean at least those kids can stand up on their skates, unlike Clarkson.

Seems like you're confusing yourself. 93Forever said that the Sharks reminded them of the Senators in the early 2000's, that were great all year but not so much in the playoffs. Especially against the Leafs.

Then you switched that around to the Leafs being a team that were great in the playoffs but didn't do so well in the standings.......back then.......

.................which had nothing to do with the original point.

I'm confused but I don't REALLY care, either.

I don't buy it, but, waiting to make a year to make a move because someone they like might be available then does seem like the type of mistake the Leafs would make.

He'll be instrumental in getting Stamkos to sign here in 2016.

Burke let him go because he didn't have the team playing tough hockey.  That is why he replaced him with carlyle.  Alot of the posters here have an opposite view towards hockey so naturally they would  be in favor of the reverse move.  However that is unlikely, he has been good to Detroit and they have been good to him.  I don't see the break up happening.
