Carolina picked up a pity point tonight, putting them 5 points up with a game in hand. (They win ties, so it's really more like a 4 point cushion.)

We don't need emotion getting in the way of securing Strome at the draft.

finishing 4th instead of 3rd increases their chances of taking Strome.

Finishing 5th doesnt though. That was kind of the point. If they are suddenly feeling reinjuvinated after the Ottawa victory, it could spell the end of any hopes in getting Strome, whether he is the player they covet or not.

A good old fashioned beat down by the Lightning tomorrow night should fix that.

Maybe it doesn't. But we don't know for sure Strome is going at #4 either. Or, again, if he is there at 4 if the Leafs would take him. Maybe they like Marner. Maybe they don't like Strome.

Seems odd to get worked up about how their finish impacts their odds to take a particular player when there's no guarantee they take him anywhere.

Things that strike you as being odd happen to normal people everyday. ::)

I am content with the Leafs finishing at least 4th last, which means the worse they could pick is 5th, which means the likely get one of McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, Strome or Marner. I just didn't want them to finish 5th and possibly fall to 6th pick. Because after the top 5 mentioned above, I wasn't really sold on who to pick 6th.

There's still a couple minutes left so knock on wood, but Oilers look like they're going to win again.

Congrats for not jinxing it. 3 points back, technically 4. 6 games left. Anything could happen.

Good article by DGB about ideas to fix the current run of Tanking. Some neat ideas in there, specifically the Gold idea and Zach Lowe's Wheel.

I'd personally like to see a move towards more of a free market system for player distribution.  I think the players should have a say in where they end up being employed coming into the league.  Come on, every college graduate has the right to choose employers, why not hockey players?

How to implement this?  Not sure.  Maybe some sort of a ranking/matching/bidding system?

I agree that a move like that would be the way to go. I've kicked around an idea for something like that in my head that would essentially be based on the idea of Baseball's system where teams have a total bonus pool determined by where they finish they can give to draft picks but unlike Baseball you wouldn't actually draft players, you'd just make them offers.

So say Buffalo finishes dead last and has a 6 million dollar bonus pool for first rounders. Then say, a team like Chicago has 750,000 dolllars. Both teams could make the offer to McDavid, or all 30 could, and he could decide whether he wanted to get paid or be on a great team. If Buffalo loses out? They have 6 million they could offer, in whole or part, to other top prospects.

Alternately what you could do is something somewhat similar to what Baseball did back when they had a "Free Agency Draft" where McDavid could be drafted by a certain number of teams and then he could choose between them.

Or even, what if you did away with the draft entirely? The cap will enforce parity, after that what difference does it make?

Soccer basically has had this since the Bosman ruling, it gave players at all ages the option to choose their future

Yeah, the players should get more of a say.  Just how they make it happen would not end up being easy to set up.

Go one way or another. Either abolish the draft entirely or keep some small lottery for the worst teams. If a team wants to blow a season away in hopes it'll improve their future I say let them.

Well, I really hope the Leafs got the winning out of their system the past two games, because we really don't want them slipping to the 5th pick position, or even the 6th if they slide down after the lottery. That would really suck not getting someone in that top 4-5 range, especially with all the sucking we've already had to endure this season.

Too bad there are some players looking for contracts next year!  Booth, please stop!
