All aboard the band wagon... were playoff bound.

A fantastic article from DownGoesBrown over on Grantland.

He just isn't a Leafs fan, which might be why some don't like him. Cole is obviously a little more exciting to listen to when the Leafs are winning because he is a fan of the team.

Fan might have been the wrong word, but I don't think you can listen to his games and not say that he isn't biased towards the Leafs. He just called Leafs goals much more enthusiastically than he does goals for the other team. He sure does sound like a Leafs fan when he's on. Hughson is a lot more even, except for when he's calling Canucks games.

The anti Leaf comment might be harsh but it's still not the three I would want doing the Leafs games , Bob Cole would be my choice , he has called all Leafs playoffs that I could remember and it wouldn't be the same without him .Jim Hughson is just too dry for my liking .

Hughson is the man at CBC now. He gets the National games and I would think that he would get the prime time Leafs games for the playoffs as well.

I can't take Bob Cole. He was great at one time, but it's time to hang them up.

They usually let Cole do them when the Habs play the Leafs though. So if that's the match-up there's a chance. If the Leafs play anybody else then there's no way.

Just checked the standings, Leafs are still in.  (I'm worried some authority figure will come along and take away the spot)

I believe Kerry Fraser is no longer employed by the league.

The ref who called that goal back on Saturday is working on something as we speak.

From what I saw, the Ottawa player pushed Komarov into Anderson.  Any contact between Komarov and Anderson was the result of that push.  In any case, glad that non-call did not cost the team the win.

With Cole, I always felt the way he treated the Leafs was more about pandering to his audience than bias. It always seemed like he gave the other team a lot of praise as well, but he was just more familiar with the Leafs since, well, he saw them a lot more. With Hughson, it's pretty clear that he's a Nyucks fan - sort of how it was also kinda clear Cole is a Habs fan.

But I think there's a pretty wide gap between an announcer being, say, excited more for one team than the other and being biased towards them. I'm absolutely fine with an announcer having a rooting interest but where it becomes a problem is if it interferes with the information he's giving. If, say, an announcer says that a penalty called against "his" team wasn't fair despite it being above board or that a player won a fight when he didn't...that's a problem. That's when your fandom interferes with the sort of basic responsibilities of a play-by-play man. Bob Cole, to me, has always been someone who's called a game with a bias towards the audience. If he's broadcasting Canada-US, he's more excited for Canada. If he broadcasts Leafs-Sens, he's more excited for the Leafs.

Just having a rooting interest doesn't mean you can't be objective. I want the Leafs to win but I'm fine with saying when they play poorly or deserve penalties. I've never gotten the impression that Cole intentionally or unconsciously distorts information so as to cast one team or another in a better light.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty pumped about the playoffs and all, but I know they're not going to beat anybody given their play lately...reverse jinx.
