Bozak's Future

I like Bozak, but it seems clear where this is heading. Bozak and his agent know this contract will be the lone big paycheque of his career, and where he signs will probably be solely about the money and nothing else.

I'm expecting him to land somewhere with a team with terrible center depth that will take anything they can get, like Winnipeg or Calgary.

No hard feelings, both sides move on.

Stajan and Bozak in Calgary, that would make sense.

Glad to see Lecavalier?s bidding war results. Most coveted UFA ended up with 5years at 4,5M per year. Hopefully that puts Bozak camp into some perspective. 4 years at 3,5M per year seems reasonable, I really do not get what Nonis is considering about that 8 years with just under 5M per year proposal.
For public consumption Nonis is saying all the right things.  I am confident that in closed door discussions he has told Bozak's agent that the term will not be accepted.  If that means Bozak goes the free agent route, such is life.  I don't for a minute think Nonis is entertaining 8 years at $4.5M.  Eight years at $2.5, different story, perhaps.

I'm not sure you can compare the 2... Let's be realistic - if Lecavalier was a true free agent, and not sitting on all that crazy buyout money, do you really think he would have taken a 4.5 mil deal? He would have been able to get close to 7-8 mil.

I don't think any agent or team can use Lecavalier's contract as any kind of measuring stick.

Your probably right at this being his one shot EVER at a large pay day and he should accept the contract from highest bidder.

Agreed.

But Bozak's agent (also Kessel's?) must be nuts proposing a max term, ~4.5m/yr contract. That we're hearing about suggests to me Leafs management must think so too... And that we're hearing about suggests they're still negotiating with him.

I do not approve.

Sure. But I've never seen a high level of defensive play from Bozak. So, we're down to Kessel seems to like him.

Well, we're down to you thinking that's the only reason, sure, but we've been there for a while. Most people are relatively comfortable with the job going to a 50+ point scorer who can win face-offs and is responsible defensively, especially given the options the Leafs had.

Yeah, I'd be comfortable with that too. But, again, he's not a 50+ point scorer.

I think you have to though. Lecavalier's not taking less money just because he was bought out, that was the market price for a 33 year old, 60ish point centre. Sure, you can't compare Bozak and Lecavalier as players, due to the difference in playing style and age, but no one was offering Lecavalier 40m for 5 years, if they were - heck, they should have just taken the contract from Tampa for nothing and maybe got a pick or two for the extra 2 years.

If the hairs you have to split to get there really need splitting, heck, you get there.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 24m

Toronto still in mix but Dal, StL, Cal, Ana and Det among teams that kicked tires on Bozak.. My sense is he'd do 5-yr deal or more

How many NHLers wouldn't do "5-yr deal or more?" 10-20?  :)

"EIGHT, no wait.. NINE.... no wait.. TWENTY SIX teams are in the mix on Bozak. Boy, things sure are heating up fast for a very in-demand player. #Source"

"Sources tell me Bozak is healthy, in the best shape of his life and plans on scoring probably 40 goals next year, with 4th line minutes."

I like Bozak, but 8 yrs, no way. 3 or 4 at around 3.5 -4 should do it.

Wish we could see another yr of Kadri before having to make this decision on Bozak.

I think Nonis is kicking the tires on a few free agent centres like Weiss, but will ultimately keep Bozak. If they can also get Clarkson on a reasonable deal, then the shopping may be over. I'd really like another top 4 D-man with some experience that can help alleviate some of Dion's minutes, but Ference might break the bank. Maybe Ranger makes the jump?

After all the talk of how Nonis was among the most eager GMs to add to his team, I'd be dissappointed if we come back with the same group of centres + Bolland.
