I think that's #5 locked up know... Unless I'm mistaken. So what's the deal with the lottery? How many can we move up/down?

They can move up a max of 4 (i.e., they could get the 1st ... 8.2% chance) and can only drop 1.

So the only way we drop obviously is a team with a lesser chance of winning it wins, correct?

Sorry, I was giving the generic boundaries.  You are right, a team in the top 5 can only drop 1 if someone beneath them wins the lottery.  So if I am understanding this right, we can't go lower than 5.

No, I think the last 14 teams get a draw. If the 4 teams behind us win, we drop.

Odds: (Leafs 8.1%)

25th 6.2%
24th 4.7%
23rd 3.6%
22nd 2.7%

We just don't know how to tank.

The Islanders on the other hand, now there is a team that knows how to tank and does so as needed.

I'm pretty sure we're 5th last.

I hope you're right, TSN says otherwise.

Anaheim is ahead in that pic because Toronto's loss tonight hadn't yet been counted; if you look, it still says 81 games played.  According to NHL.com, the Leafs are in 26th place, or 5th from the bottom.

Thus, we'll probably pick 5th, but there's a small chance that we'll pick either 6th or 1st.  Fingers crossed for Tuesday, for what it's worth.

They both have the same number of points, so is goal differential or regulation wins the thing that separates them?

If it's regulation wins, we have the 6th if it's goal difference then we are 5th.

Games Played: While the season is in progress, the team with the fewest games played among the tied teams.
1 - Wins: Most total wins among the tied teams, excluding games won in the shootout.
2 - Head-to-Head Record: Most points in games against each other among the tied teams.
3 - Goal Differential: Using the total goals scored during the regular season, the greater positive differential between goals for and against among the tied teams.

If that's right then we are 6th overall. :(

NHL.com has it like this, with the Leafs 5th last...
DIV GP W L OT P ROW GF GA Diff Home Away S/O L10 Streak
23 Carolina         SE 81 33 32 16 82 32 212 239 -27 20-14-7 13-18-9 1-6 6-3-1 Won 2
24 Minnesota   NW 81 35 35 11 81 24 176 222 -46 20-16-4 15-19-7 11-9 6-3-1 Won 1
25 Anaheim     PAC 82 34 36 12 80 31 204 231 -27 21-18-2 13-18-10 3-7 4-5-1 Lost 1
26 Toronto         NE 82 35 37 10 80 31 231 264 -33 18-16-7 17-21-3 4-5 3-5-2 Lost 1
27 NY Islanders  ATL 82 34 37 11 79 27 203 255 -52 17-18-6 17-19-5 7-4 5-5-0 Lost 1
28 Montr?al       NE 82 31 35 16 78 26 212 226 -14 16-15-10 15-20-6 5-12 3-3-4 Won 1
29 Edmonton   NW  81 32 39 10 74 27 212 236 -24 18-17-6 14-22-4 5-7 4-3-3 OT 1
30 Columbus   CEN 82 29 46 7 65 25 202 262 -60 17-21-3 12-25-4 4-5 6-4-0 Won 2

Sorry about the formatting. Didn't have time to figure out the whole table thing - the key lines i think are ROW (regulation and OT wins) and then differential. Leafs were tied with Anaheim, so as Hurricane said earlier, the Ducks win the tiebreaker.

Edit: Dangit, that's NOT how preview said it would come out!!!  >:(

Edit2: That's a bit better. Not perfect, but it should get the idea across. Ducks win the tiebreaker because head to head only counts when each team plays in the other's rink.

In fact we might have won more games in the shootout, I'm so confused.

Damn you NHL/TSN. :D

EDIT: Thanks Derk.

Someone needs to explain this to TSN.  ;D

Even before the Habs game was added the Leafs had a worse goal differential.

I thought total wins counted before goal differential, thankfully not.

5th overall baby!

When was the last time a team won the lottery from that spot?

Assuming we're 5th (or 26th) and with a team being only allowed to move up 4 spots, we have a 17.2% chance of dropping to 6th. Do I have this right?

25th  6.2%
24th  4.7%
23rd  3.6%
22nd  2.7%

ttl = 17.2%

74.7% - 5th
