If Komi is blocking a shot, how is he suppose to clear the front of the net as well? The man was clearly Liles. I agree that Liles is playing well also, but Schenn and Komi are your penalty killing guys and crease clearing tandem. That play was Liles all the way, he simply let the guy have a free shot and cost us a goal IMO.

I think there's equal blame on that particular goal. Komisarek and Liles were both around the net. Komisarek went down to block the shot and missed which left Liles to do the crease clearing which, as you mention, isn't a strong point of his game. Liles is to blame for not clearing the crease, Komisarek is to blame for taking himself out of the play.

I don't know. He hasn't been that bad defensively and is one of the better skaters allowing him to get in players space quickly. Komi is the muscle, clear the guy away from the front of the net guy.

I've been quite impressed with Liles, so far, in all aspects of his game. I thought there were so glaring deficiencies in his game and have yet to see any of that.

Yes he was somewhat at fault but there were 2 guys there. Komi went for the block and missed, leaving his man alone in front of the net. Grabbo was already trying to block and failed.

If you go for the block you better make it otherwise your defensive assignment will be blown. That's how I saw it.

Gus goes down on every shot.

That's the style.

It's funny when it's a shot from the blue line that ends up 3 feet above the cross bar.

The article is 10 months old but here's a snippet from it...

"he's a traditional Swedish butterfly goalie: His style relies more on reflexes and reactions to stop the puck. He plays deeper in his crease in order to give himself more time to react to shots and potential deflections. His style was honed and refined in Sweden with the goalie coach Erik Granqvist, who does a great job of coaching many Farjestad goalies, including Cristopher Nihlstorp and some others."

Shoot high on butterfly goalies has always been the rule of thumb.

Komi can't win here. He's supposed to block shots, sometimes you miss. But he can't do both at the same time, right?

Sure he can win. He can not get faked out by Malkin and block the shot. That's no harsher an expectation than expecting Liles to suddenly become great at clearing the crease.

My problem with Liles is that 1) he shouldn't be on the PK and 2) he just stood there and didn't even make an attempt.

Good article.

It's not new though. He's averaged about a minute on the PK per game this year.  Either way, that's not on him.

Sure, like I said, equal blame to go around.

On the replay Liles is all over the man on the other side of the crease.

Is he expected to defend 2 players?

When the goal is scored, he's just looking at the end boards in front, while that player shot the rebound in.
