Official Tank Nation Topic

I'm all for the tank now..they are not going to play 700 hockey or whatever for the rest of the schedule..not after the 1-10-1 that they have shown.

My only problem with tanking is giving that top 5 pick to get Nash..I'd like to keep it if at all possible.

I have a feeling the Leafs will rebound and start playing well enough to get close to the playoffs (but not close enough) and end up with a pick in the 8-12 range. That just seems to be the way things go around these parts.

Edmonton is looking for defenceman. A Top 5 Leaf pick + Schenn or Gunnerson might be able to secure a 2nd overall. I just don't know if I have any trust in this management to blow it up again.

You know, I don't want to tank.  I really don't... but I'm looking at the big picture here.

If we just bottom out, fall right into the bottom 5:

-  We get a great pick in what is supposed to be a top heavy draft
-  We will almost certainly see a coaching change
-  We will see some significant player movement in the summer.  You can be sure BB would rearrange the deck quite a bit (i.e. Schenn for a top 6 forward... possible Kulemin/Mac dealt? etc).
-  We will likely get a good look at the kids the last little bit here... call up Kadri, Colborne, and Holzer.

It would mark a real shift in this team.

So while I don't like "tanking" I'm thinking of how much better we might be positioned come September.

I agree with this premise.

The unfortunate thing is that we're four years into this fly-by whatever Burke wants to call it.  This whole thing should have started then.  Four years down the drain.

I have zero trust in Burke et el.  He has built a team of undetermined youngsters and prospect, all the while losing games left and right.  I am not excited about this team going forward.  Way too soft and no structure.

Blow the whole thing up again.  It's all bad.

I heard a caller on TSN radio suggest that if we got, say the number 5 pick, Burke should trade that to the Oilers for the number 2, along with Schenn. I thought that was a brilliant plan. The first two picks should be the Russian forwards? Edmonton wants D men. Makes a lot of sense for both teams if it works out that way. So many fans crying for 'elite' prospects. Something like this may be the only way to get one.

Picking up good pieces like Kessel, Gardiner, etc counts as years down the drain?

Look, it's becoming pretty obvious that this year will be a failure.  But just because we don't make the playoffs this year doesn't mean it's over.  Sure, it's annoying, aggrevating, etc.

However, hockey will come back next year.  And as long as Burke keeps stocking the system with young prospects, keeps his picks and does his drafting, the team will get better in terms of skill/personnel.

Agreed. I get people are down on this team right now. Nobody likes prolonged losing streaks at any time of the year, especially when it causes the team to slip out of a playoff spot. But if you put it into perspective it really isn't a total disaster worth blowing it all up again and selling off all the peices.

It was always pretty clear we were a bubble team at best this season, and that's exactly what we are. Burke has been piling up on prospects and picks, and the 'rebuild' is still clearly under construction.

Better times are still ahead here. It's just taking longer than most of us had anticipated or hoped for. I think many of us, including myself got a little ahead of ourselves on how good we thought this team could be this season.

I would be thrilled to get Grigorenko.

It's not a five-year rebuild, Burke didn't want that so...Cup next year  I guess?  It's year 4.

My five year plan was to make 1/2 million dollars in the stock market. I'm on year 4 as well. Not close yet.

If the Leafs go 12-5-2, they would have a bigger chance of NOT making the playoffs as they have a chance of making them now.  They are finished, so why bother?  Hopefully they bring up some young guys.

I'm pretty sure Edmonton would just take Ryan Murray who's been compared by many to Niedermayer.

I'm not really sure how much value Schenn has right now and he's on a much more expensive contract than Murray would be. Not saying it's impossible but I personally don't think it makes sense.

I've never been a proponent of tanking, but the last thing I want to see is them fall short of the playoffs by a point.

Just keep losing.
